Charles Lummis (1859-1928) was an author, journalist, editor, photographer, Los Angeles city librarian, adventurer, close friend and Harvard classmate of Theodore Roosevelt, and champion of the American Indian. He walked from Cincinnati to Los Angeles in the winter of 1884-1885 to accept a job on the then three-year old Los Angeles Times.

One opportunity to understand 400 years of the history of North America and its bright future

This very good book complements the ill dominated Anglo-Saxon version of the history of North America, however approaches like this are lacking. Some justice made to the first Europeans arriving North America, many of whom remained there and never went back to Europe hence this history book is a reason to be proud to both; Americans as well as Europeans. The American descendants of these Spanish can feel pride today of their European roots. The way author addresses the Native Americans conveys, however, a bit the dominance of the literature of the time hence the role the native Americans played seems a bit underestimated and lacks the perspective of the time; they inspired the Spanish in pursue of the humanism over which the Human Rights were further developed (Las Casas, etc.). The author bravery addresses unpopular topics of the history of North America challenging the interested official version delivered as schools. All in all a very good reference book for any American interested in his own history and in the history of the world.

Must Read! And You'll Want Your Own Copy As You'll Find Yourself Going Back To It Over & Over!

This book is an amazing eye opening book that covers so much. You may even find yourself amongst the pages. I owned this book previously but lent it to a relative and didn't want to ask for it back so was very pleased to find it on Amazon. A must read. Finding peace and solitude in a world of craziness sometimes created in our own minds.

An important topic, ineffectively done

My advice is this: Look up an essay called "Solitude and Leaderhsip" by William Deresiewicz. It will take you 10% of the time to read, it will be 10x as persuasive, and it's free. Then, if you are still craving more, pick up Storr's book for some added context.

The central idea of this book goes directly against a cultural norm so deeply embedded that we don't even know to question it.

Here is the central idea in Storr's words:

"The capacity to form attachments on equal terms is considered evidence of emotional maturity. It is the absence of this capacity which is considered pathological. Whether there may be other criteria of emotional maturity, like the capacity to be alone, is seldom taken into account.

Viewing intimate attachments as the hub around which a person's life revolves does, in my view, less than justice to the importance of work, to the emotional significance of what goes on in the mind of the individual when he is alone, and, more especially, to the central place occupied by the imagination in those who are capable of creative achievement. Intimate attachments are a hub around which a person's life revolves, not necessarily _the_ hub."

I am giving this book 5 stars only because it is important to give this idea some thought. I am thankful that Storr put this idea in front of me, but his treatment of it seemed less than adequate. The arguments that fill the book are scattered, incohesive, Freud-ridden, and just generally less than persuasive. For instance, Storr goes from a chapter about the uses of solitude to a chapter about how people in jail deal with solitude. There is no clear outline, no clear attempt to defend the argument initially proposed.

"In mastering your body and your mind, you will master your life"

This book is fantastic! Shi Yan Ming is very inspiring, in both his workout and his philosophy of life. His happiness and positive attitude shines through on every page. You will learn stretches, kicks, punches, and a Shaolin workout, but most importantly you will learn the philosophy of kung fu. As Master Shi Yan Ming says, "Kung fu isn't just an exercise routine. It is a philosophy of life. The action is the philosophy. The philosophy is the action."

Throughout the book there are interludes of "Meditation" in which he gives insights about life in general; these are very thought-provoking and interesting. Don't skip these! They are essential to the program. The stretches and workout will get you into good shape, but this is not a book to just learn self-defense moves, it's more to use as a mind-body workout to increase health, both mental and physical, and enhance confidence. I also liked reading about his journey, how he came to be a Shaolin monk living in New York City.

This book may just transform your life and your health!

Shaolin building a better me.

I've been in and out of the Martial Arts since I was six years old. Years ago I suffered a back injury which due to not being able to do anything without intense pain for years turned my abs from a six pack into a keg. I have since slowly rebuilt my back and have wanted to get back into full fighting form (the fittest I've ever been).

Literally I have skill, practice and ranking in the following forms: Hoshinsol, Tai Lung Young Tao, Tae Kwan Do, Tai Chi, Drunken Monkey, Togakure Ryu amongsts others. I am no master. But for me I was competent and skilled enough to be happy in life. Right before my serious back injury at work, I started practicing some Capoeira (which fortunately for me was the only thing that stopped me from actually breaking my back). Literally I had ripped and tore every muscle from my shoulder blades down. I only refer to this to illustrate where I've been in life and the fact that rebuilding was hard, and I have looked at many various martial arts forms, instructional materials etc. to try to be a better me again.

Maybe my health wasn't right at the time for the other things I've tried, but now I have this book, and with practice people have remarked that I have been getting skinnier every time they see me, and they've told me that I am looking more fit. These workouts feel wonderful. My self esteem has increased. My back is stronger. I can see my abs again. My clothes feel larger and less constricting.

I have more energy throughout the day now and my old flexibility is coming back. Also to note: In one aspect I am now more flexible than I've ever been. And as the book says "Merry Christmas!" it's improved my whole mood and has raised my spirits (you should not skip the meditations in the book for they are wonderful as well).

A good way to change your life

I have this book and have been learning from it for about 2 weeks now. Therefore I would like to offer my opinions and maybe do away with any preconceived notions.

No, the workout itself will not take 15 minutes a day. At first it will take less than that and then later it would take a bit longer. No, you will not attain a Shaolin warrior's physique within 28 days nor be able to have a good enough grasp of Shaolin kung-fu to take on 10 guys like Jet Li.

However, what is great about this book is that it gives you a viable, well-rounded exercise regimen. This is especially true for guys like me who are forced to a more sedentary lifestyle and have no time to even go on a treadmill after work. In fact, I do a lot of these exercises in the parking lot outside my office when I needed to a take a few breaks in between tasks.

By using this book and doing the exercises, you are get to develop a habit of taking care of yourself. Instead of plunging into a new lifestyle that will leave you burnt out in the end, you get to ease into it day by day. At the end of the 28 days, at least speaking from my point of view, you will have that exercise system that you can train for the rest of your life.

For those who do a different martial art, such as taekwondo or karate, this is a valueable way to do some cross training and take yourself to a whole new level. You'll be doing stretches and moves you have never done before and it will improve your aptitude in your chosen martial art.

Ric Viers has worked in the film and television industry for more than fifteen years. His location sound credits include hundreds of productions for nearly every major television network, Universal Studios, Dateline, Good Morning America, Disney, and many others. Known as the “Rock and Roll Professor of Sound,” Viers has hosted several video series including Rode University, Rode Rage, and The Detroit Chop Shop Video Diaries. His sound design work has been used in major motion pictures, television shows, radio programs, and video games. In 2007, Viers launched his own label, Blastwave FX, to celebrate the release of his 100th sound effects library. Viers is the author of The Sound Effects Bible and is considered to be the world’s largest independent provider of sound effects, with more than 250,000 sounds and over 600 sound effects libraries to his credit. Boom!

I wussed out and checked this book out of my local library so I figure I at least owe Ric a positive review. I'm a total noob DIY film hobbyist who been noticing how truly awful my sound is. What's sad it that I'm an fairly experienced recording engineer. It's clear to me now that location sound is a totally different ball game. This book is absolutely loaded with very practical tips and techniques. So many film books are written by "professors" and "instructors" with only a few credits to their name. If Ric Viers isn't an experienced journeyman, he's doing a amazing job of concealing it. I just needed some basic points about mics and techniques and sure got them but there's quite a lot of valuable advice for those who are more career-oriented. Sure, he uses humor but this book means business. The chapter on the film business and working on a set should be priceless to freelancers in any number of creative fields. And best of all, the author doesn't pretend that his book tells you everything you need to know. There's no substitute for real experience. Bravo.

Highly recommended for the non-sound professional, hobbyist, or filmmaker just starting out.

Ric Viers has a very inviting, laid back writing style. While this book may contain much the same information you'd find in a textbook, he wrote it as if he were having a pleasant conversation about location sound with the reader. That makes this otherwise dry material a real page turner.

I would say that this is a must-read for anyone aspiring to a job as a "sound guy" in the film industry. I'd also recommend it to non-audio film and video professionals so that they can get up to speed on what their colleagues in sound are doing and why.

If you're a video blogger or a video making hobbyist like me, I would not only recommend this book, but I'd say it's your duty to pick up a copy. The techniques in this book apply just as well to the affordable (read: cheap) equipment that we all know and love as they do to the high-end gear used in the film industry. I can almost guarantee you'd be better off buying a mic that's $15 cheaper and putting that extra cash towards this book.

The book is also from 2012. That means that it discusses equipment that's still current, and that you can buy today (oftentimes right here on Amazon -- but they didn't pay me to say that).

My only gripe is so minor that the review doesn't even lose a star: Ric does often repeat himself on certain points. It's probably intentional reiteration to ensure that the reader hasn't missed a key element, however it's noticeable to the point of "breaking the fourth wall". If books had walls. It may not be the best metaphor, but there you have it.

I bought the paperback version rather than the digital. The quality of the printing is overall high. The cover has a nice matte feel to it, and inside the paper stock is thick but not problematically so. There are plenty of illustrations and images, but not so many that you'd feel cheated at having bought a picture book.

All in all, a great read!

Great informational book!

This read is a no brainer for people in the location sound field looking to brush up or renforce their knowledge. Very easy read, not overly complex. The only reason I did not give the book five stars is the lack of information on lav placement and mounting techniques. I understand that audio from the boom will always give the best and most realistic perspective, but most work I do in the field heavily relies on the use of lav mics.

Overall a must read for film pros.
