A rollercoaster ride of a book that I could not put down.

This book was so exciting. it was not predictable and it had twists and turns that I did not see coming. Rarely do I finish a book in one sitting, but that was not the case for this book. My heart was beating so fast I expecting to bust out of my chest. My natural inclination with a book this good is to baby it because I do not want it to end, but I just could not help myself. I loved the character development and I liked the characters. I understand that in books like these that things are not always what they seem, but I did not expect this surprises and was glad to see that Jeremey did not bail because I would have long before and to how it played out was so gratifying. There was not a moment in this book that was slow, or that it felt like it lagged. In my opinion because of the storying telling, the plot twists, and the way that the author took my emotions on a rollercoaster ride this book merits every one of those five stars.

Keeps you guessing until almost the last page!

Reading The Couple Next Door is like carefully prying open up a set of Russian matryoshka nestling dolls, wondering if you've reached the final kernel of truth, and yet fearful there's another layer, another "truth" to uncover.

Jeremy Booth leads a comfortable, lonely life in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood, until the day Shane McAllister literally falls at his feet, thrown down the apartment building stairs by a leather-clad Tom of Finland look-alike, Cole. Jeremy learns the couple, newly arrived from Chicago, live next door and almost immediately, senses something is not right. Why does Shane call his partner John AND Cole? When John invites Jeremy to their apartment for a drink, why does Shane act like he's never met Jeremy before? Who is Vera? What exactly is the nature of Shane and John/Cole's relationship?

Without revealing much more of the plot, the story unfolds as each "doll" opens to reveal a story that may or may not be the truth. Rick Reed keeps the suspense going throughout, and you wonder if anything is real or true. Even to the last page, I felt there could yet be another twist.

The Seattle setting is a perfect background for the story. The cold waters of Chicago's Lake Michigan that Reed has depicted in many of his novels features prominently as well. An excellent book!

Genuinely creepy

This book is scary. Genuinely creepy. I think the cover art conveys it quite well. Jeremy Booth is an ordinary guy who falls for a neighbor. That neighbor though, has secrets. False identities, plot twists, close calls. They all add up to a book I couldn’t put down once I started.

On the other hand, Seattle is a character in its own right here. Charming with its rainy vistas and gay bars. Jeremy is buoyed and supported by his city. It’s almost warm, and infuses the plot with substance and weight and location.

Of the several Rick R. Reed books I’ve had the pleasure to review, this one is the best. As always, fans of his are in for a delightful journey.

Marvelous achievement! Quick, clear, and powerful!

In the short span of 123 pages, Thomas Patterson delivers a stunning and succinct overview of "Western civilization" and its encounters with "savages," different "races," and the Other. He recounts briefly yet movingly the Spanish onslaught of Native Americans, ancient Greek notions of barbarism, the British colonization of Ireland, and more.
But Patterson only gives the briefest sketch of these meetings--he is more concerned with the ever-changing ideologies with which some Europeans justify the wholesale looting, enslavement, murder, and colonization of others around the globe. He portrays conservative and liberal ideas, as well as racial and economic notions. He sketches the involvement of science with racism and colonialism, and he brings to life the deeply classist and sexist hatreds of Europeans elites--hatreds which easily translated into colonialism (inferiors and feminine types around the world "needed" to be ruled).
Remarkably, Patterson manages to find space for critiques of "civilization," both from within European societies and from those they encountered. In this way agency is not restricted to a few rich, White Europeans, and the dialogue is constant and contested.
I assigned this book to my upper division college students, and they comprehended and thrived on this book. It is quick, clear, and powerful--truly a marvelous contribution. I will surely assign it again. Highest recommendation!

THIS BOOK MAY SHATTER YOUR PERSPECTIVE!

If you truly believe that Western civilization is the worldwide and most complete civilization, while all others are parochial, then this book may shatter your perspective.

In "Inventing Western Civilization," Thomas C. Patterson suggested that "civilized people are obsessed with their uncivilized kin and neighbors--[so] they call them savages, barbarians or the `masses' who lack their polish, refinement, and sophistication; who... have moved en mass into their midst."

Patterson develops his argument and explores the idea of civilization in only five short chapters. He examines the constantly changing "social and political conditions in which civilization is produced and deployed."

The work questions conventional knowledge about the idea of western civilization created by white, male, elites to preserve and perpetuate their power in society.

this really makes you think

This book was an assigned book in my Introduction to Cultural Anthropology course. Although the premise of the book has nothing to do with the field of cultural anthro, reading it helped me put the notion of "civilization" and such ideas as "culture" and "race" into perspective. Definitely not a book to take to the beach, but a good read for those looking to expand their knowledge of political institutions.

Not a "How To" Book - More of a "Why" or "Why Not" Book

Perfect Software is a high-level look at some of the "big picture questions" about testing, such as: Why do we have to bother testing? Do we have to test everything? What makes testing so hard? Is perfect software possible? Why can't we just accept a few bugs?

It's a small book (under 200 pages), and a quick read.

Here's an interesting example that will give you a flavor of the book.

In chapter 3 "Why Not Just Test Everything?", Weinberg has a section called "There are an infinite number of possible tests." He talks about a backdoor placed into a highly secure program whereby the ordinary password protection could be bypassed by typing W followed by three spaces, then M followed by three spaces, then J followed by exactly 168 more keystrokes without once using the letter L. Then he writes:

"Do you get the point by now? If you didn't guess that the number of tests required to exhaustively test software is infinite, or at least "a number greater than I could run in my lifetime", you didn't understand the point of this chapter. Now you do."

If you are looking for a "how to" book, you should look elsewhere. If you are looking for a "why" (and sometimes "why not") book, this might be for you.

a shocking look within

I bought this book on the advise of a colleague. Part way through the first chapter I was hooked. I didn't really learn a whole lot about testing, but I did learn a lot about myself as a tester. Chapter 7 almost hurt me with the realization more than a few times of "I've done that", although also provided a deeper understanding of how to deal with people's defensive reactions.
I do recommend that most testers give the book a read, and then give it to your manager. Many developers, business analysts, test managers, and executives could learn much from this. I'm now planning on buying this book for a few friends on previous teams that still struggle with some of the points within.

Succinct masterpiece: reframes view of testing

This is a short, but amazing read! It addresses so many misconceptions and misunderstandings about software from all angles: from the software tester, to the developers, to the managers, to the customers/users. Weinberg provides meaningful anecdotes to drive home his points. At the end of each chapter, there is a concise summary and a list of common mistakes based on the topic of the chapter, which gives the reader the opportunity to take these points home (or to work). A must for anyone who develops, tests, managees, or uses software!
