Rainbow in the Cloud: The Wisdom and Spirit of Maya Angelou, by Maya Angelou

“Words mean more than what is set down on paper,” Maya Angelou wrote in her groundbreaking memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Indeed, Angelou’s words have traveled the world and transformed lives—inspiring, strengthening, healing. Through a long and prolific career in letters, she became one of the most celebrated voices of our time.

Now, in this collection of sage advice, humorous quips, and pointed observations culled from the author’s great works, including The Heart of a Woman, On the Pulse of Morning, Gather Together in My Name, and Letter to My Daughter, Maya Angelou’s spirit endures. Rainbow in the Cloud offers resonant and rewarding quotes on such topics as creativity and culture, family and community, equality and race, values and spirituality, parenting and relationships. Perhaps most special, Maya Angelou’s only son, Guy Johnson, has contributed some of his mother’s most powerful sayings, shared directly with him and the members of their family.

A treasured keepsake as well as a beautiful tribute to a woman who touched so many, Rainbow in the Cloud reminds us that “If one has courage, nothing can dim the light which shines from within.”

chapter 1

Childhood & Parenthood

A child’s talent to endure stems from her ignorance of alternatives.

Everything of value takes work, particularly relationships. If a mother and daughter don’t understand each other, and further don’t have sympathy for each other’s lack of understanding then the task is to build a bridge across the chasm of misunderstanding.

Home is the nest where children are raised and the place where they are the most important inhabitants. In homes in which this is not true, the parents are not making the sacrifices which are necessary.

I believe that one can never leave home. I believe that one carries the shadows, the dreams, the fears and dragons of home under one’s skin, at the extreme corners of one’s eyes, and possibly in the gristle of the earlobe.

I love my son and I loved him when he was growing up, but I was not in love with him which means that I did not dote and I was willing to make the hard decisions. One should never let the love of one’s child prevent or hinder the vital and necessary work of parenting.

If our children are to approve of themselves, they must see that we approve of ourselves.

Independence is a heady draft, and if you drink it in your youth it can have the same effect on the brain as young wine.

It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength. We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter their color; equal in importance no matter their texture.

Of all the needs (there are none imaginary) a lonely child has, the one that must be satisfied, if there is going to be hope and a hope of wholeness, is the unshaking need for an unshakable God.

Parents who tell their offspring that sex is an act performed only for procreation do everyone a serious disservice.

The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned.

Our young must be taught that racial peculiarities do exist, but that beneath the skin, beyond the differing features, and into the true heart of being, fundamentally, we are more alike, my friend, than we are unalike.

The Black child must learn early to allow laughter to fill his mouth or the million small cruelties he encounters will congeal and clog his throat.

The command to grow up at once was more bearable than the faceless horror of wavering purpose, which was youth.

This is no longer my house, it is my home. And because it is my home, I have not only found myself healed of the pain of a broken love affair, but discovered that when something I have written does not turn out as I had hoped, I am not hurt so badly. I find that my physical ailments, which are a part of growing older, do not depress me so deeply. I find that I am quicker to laugh and much quicker to forgive.

What child can resist a mother who laughs freely and often?

When I was young I often wondered how I appeared to people around me, but I never thought to see myself in relation to the entire world.

Black Identity

Although as Black people we had a dignity and a love of life, those qualities had to be defended constantly.

Although there was always generosity in the Negro neighborhood, it was indulged on pain of sacrifice. Whatever was given by Black people to other Blacks was most probably needed as desperately by the donor as by the receiver. A fact which made the giving or receiving a rich exchange.

Black Americans of my generation didn’t look kindly on public mournings except during or immediately after funerals. We were expected by others and by ourselves to lighten the burden by smiling, to deflect possible new assaults by laughter. Hadn’t it worked for us for centuries? Hadn’t it?

Black entertainers have had to be ten times better than anyone else, historically.

Black women whose ancestors were brought to the United States beginning in 1619 have lived through conditions of cruelties so horrible, so bizarre, the women had to reinvent themselves. They had to find safety and sanctity inside themselves or they would not have been able to tolerate such torture. They had to learn quickly to be self-forgiving, for often their exterior actions were at odds with their interior beliefs.

Despite the harshness of their lives, I have always found that older Black women are paragons of generosity. The right plea, arranged the right way, the apt implication, persuade the hungriest Black woman into sharing her last biscuit.

How could I explain a young Black boy to a grown man who had been born White?

I do not believe the N word should be used at all . . . It is time to retire the N word and rely on our vocabulary to speak to people without calling them any racial pejorative at all.

I don’t go for that hate talk. Negroes ain’t got time to be hating anybody. We got to get together.

I was born to work up to my grave

But I was not born

To be a slave.

I, with millions of other Americans, have the same dream Martin Luther King Jr. had; when I wake up I wish some of the things I dreamt would be true. I wish that little Black and White boys and girls would hold hands without being shocked at their nearness to each other and say in a natural way, “We have overcome.”

It was a traditional ruse that was used to shield the Black vulnerability; we laughed to keep from crying.

Malcolm X was America’s Molotov cocktail, thrown upon the White hope that all Black Americans would follow the nonviolent tenets of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Prejudice is a burden which confuses the past, threatens the future, and renders the present inaccessible.

Most Black Americans ridicule and revile the Uncle Toms they see on film and television or read about. What they don’t realize is that these people stepped and fetched in a nation and time that it was hard for Black people to survive, much less find a decent job. Rarely is consideration given to the sacrifices these people made in order to feed their families, what it cost them in self-respect to make sure the next generation survived. It is these circumstances that make Mr. Paul Dunbar’s poem, “We Wear the Mask,” so poignant.

My people had used music to soothe slavery’s torment or to propitiate God, or to describe the sweetness of love and the distress of lovelessness, but I knew no race could sing and dance its way to freedom.

Since we were descendants of African slaves torn from the land, we reasoned we wouldn’t have to earn the right to return, yet we wouldn’t be so arrogant as to take anything for granted.

The Africans say that “Only a fool points to his history with his left hand.” What this means is that you must know and respect where you came from. How can you truly respect yourself if you do not know or understand the struggles and trials your people surmounted for you to be here?

The drums began. The audience pounded out the rhythm, moving it, controlling and possessing the music, the orchestra and me.

“Uh, uh, oh huh.

O yea, freedom,

Uh huh. Uh huh.”

As the song ended, the small crowd thundered a hot appreciation. Even as I bowed, I knew the applause was only in a small part for me. I had been merely the ignition which set off their fire. It was our history, our painful passage and uneven present, that burned luminously in the dark theater.

The man who is a bigot

is the worst thing God has got.

Through the centuries of despair and dislocation, we had been creative, because we faced down death by daring to hope.

Unbidden would come the painful reminder—“Not all slaves were stolen, nor were all slave dealers European.”

Unfortunately, fortitude was not like the color of my skin, given to me once and mine forever. It needed to be resurrected each morning and exercised painstakingly. It also had to be fed with at least a few triumphs.

We are not our brother’s keeper; we are our brother and we are our sister. We must look past complexion and see community.

We must ask questions and find answers that will help us to avoid dissolving into the merciless maw of history.

Whites had been wrong all along. Black and brown skin did not herald debasement and a divinely created inferiority. We were capable of controlling our cities, our selves, and our lives with elegance and success. Whites were not needed to explain the working of the world, nor the mysteries of the mind.

AmericAfrican and Southern Black American women can exude a charm which acts as a narcotic on their targets.

Appearances to the contrary, there is a code of social behavior among Southern Blacks (and almost all of us fall into that category, willingly or not) which is as severe and distinct as a seventeenth-century minuet or an African initiation ritual. There is a moment to speak, a tone of voice to be used, words to be carefully chosen, a time to drop one’s eyes, and a split-second when a stranger can be touched on the shoulder or arm or even knee without conveying anything more than respectful friendliness. A lone woman in a new situation knows it is correct to smile slightly at the other women, never grin (a grin is proper only between friends or people making friendship), and nod to unknown men. This behavior tells the company that the new woman is ready to be friendly but is not thirsting after another woman’s mate. She should be sensual, caring for her appearance, but taking special care to minimize her sexuality.

Every family in our country has someone, a daughter, a son, a nephew, a niece, a cousin, who has served or is serving in the armed services. These relatives have risked or are risking their lives in foreign places few of us have ever seen or can even spell. These heroes and sheroes deserve our heartfelt gratitude for holding the flag of freedom high in the foreign air.

If growing up is painful for the Southern Black girl, being aware of her displacement is the rust on the razor that threatens the throat.

I’m grateful to be an American. I am grateful that we can be angry at the terrorist assault on 9/11 and at the same time be intelligent enough not to hold a grudge against every Arab and every Muslim.

I believe that there lives a burning desire in the most sequestered private heart of every American, a desire to belong to a great country.

Our country is grieving. Each child who has been slaughtered belongs to each of us and each slain adult is a member of our family. It is impossible to explain the horror to ourselves and to our survivors. We need to hold each other’s hands and look into each other’s eyes and say, “I am sorry.” —In response to the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14, 2012

The South of the United States can be so impellingly beautiful that sophisticated creature comforts diminish in importance.

The Stars and Stripes was our flag and our only flag, and that knowledge was almost too painful to bear.

Values among Southern rural Blacks are not quite the same as those existing elsewhere. Age has more worth than wealth, and religious piety more value than beauty.

We must wage a ceaseless battle against the forces of greed and hatred which are the foundations of all political inequality.

When cane straps flog the body

dark and lean, you feel the blow.

Community & Culture

All people use food for more reasons than mere nutrition.

Blithering ignorance can be found wherever you choose to live.

Don’t be a prisoner of ignorance. The world is larger, far more complicated, and far more wonderful than ignorance allows.

Each one of us has lived through some devastation, some loneliness, some weather superstorm or spiritual superstorm, when we look at each other we must say, I understand. I understand how you feel because I have been there myself.

Hold those things that tell your history and protect them.

In an unfamiliar culture, it is wise to offer no innovations, no suggestions, or lessons. The epitome of sophistication is utter simplicity.

Often we feel we must have infuriated nature and it has responded by bringing havoc upon our communities. I think it is unwise to personalize nature. I think when we don’t know what to do it’s wise to do nothing. Sit down quietly; quiet our hearts and minds and breathe deeply.

Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.

The onus is upon us all to work to improve the human condition. Perform good deeds, for that is truly the way to battle the forces of entropy that are at work in our world. The composite of all our efforts can have an effect. Good done anywhere is good done everywhere.

Though there’s one thing that I cry for

I believe enough to die for

That is every man’s responsibility to man.

Thus we lived through a major war. The question in the ghettos was, Can we make it through a minor peace?

Together, we may be able to plan a less painful future. Separate, we can only anticipate further ruptures and deeper loneliness.

We are social animals. When we unite in purpose, we are greater than the sum of our parts. Everything that divides or isolates us prevents and obstructs us from realizing our potential as a species.

Love & Relationships

A conversation between friends can sound as melodic as a scripted song.

Always be concerned when a naked man offers you his shirt; a person can’t love you if he or she can’t love him- or herself.

Boys seem to think that girls hold the keys to all happiness, because the female is supposed to have the right of consent and/or dissent. It’s interesting that they didn’t realize in those yearning days past, nor even in the present days of understanding, that if the female had the right to decide, she suffered from her inability to instigate. That is, she could only say yes or no if she was asked.

From the moment you leave this house, don’t let anybody raise you. Every time you get into a relationship you will have to make concessions, compromises, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Hear the words, feel the words and accept the inspiration and advice given. I challenge you!
By Kelly Moncrief
This book is full of inspiration, advice, motivation and humor. As you read the words you can hear Maya Angelou speaking them as you were long lost family members or a dear friend. One of my favorite quotes out of the book is; "Let me remind all women that we live longer and better lives when we have sisters we love, not necessarily born in our bloodline or of our race."

If you have never seen Maya Angelou in a movie, a documentary, or even read one of her books this is a must read. I send a challenge out to one and all to pick up this book even if it is from your local library and read it. Then tell us what you think and your favorite quote, sentence, phrase or paragraph from the book!

Twenty-One Candles: Stories for Christmas, by Mike Mason

Twenty-one Candles - Stories for Christmas by Mike Mason For over two decades, award-winning author Mike Mason has been circulating Christmas stories to a select circle of his closest friends. Now he's sharing these classic Christmas stories with us. Praise for Mike Mason's Twenty-one Candles "It has been my delight to listen as Mike Mason read aloud many of these stories-a score and one more of narratives that circle like candlelight around a season when light is scarce. Now, reading them, they bring a unique brightness, because in one way or another they illuminate more than just snow scenes and families around hearth fires. With a light and often whimsical touch, Mason's tales speak of the way 'people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light' (Mt 12:16)." Luci Shaw author of Breath for the Bones: Art, Imagination and Spirit "The best moments of Christmas are spent in the evening by the fire, telling stories... stories of courage and conviction, of discovering anew 'peace on earth; goodwill toward men.' My friend, Mike Mason, has penned a collection of heartwarming stories to be told time and again, every Advent. May Twenty-one Candles become a Christmas classic for years to come!" Joni Eareckson Tada Joni and Friends International Disability Center "In the tradition of our favorite Christmas tales, passed down from such masters as Charles Dickens and O. Henry, Mike Mason has lit Twenty-one Candles to shine fresh light into our darkness. Some shine with a mythopoeic ambiance, while others glow like mirrors from day to day life. They celebrate Christmas in ways you'll want to share. Gather around the Christmas tree; put another log on the fire. Mike Mason's stories want to be read aloud-read to families, to friends, to church groups-and you'll delight in sharing them." D.S. Martin author of Conspiracy of Light: Poems Inspired by the Legacy of C.S. Lewis "If you haven't read Mike Mason you live an impoverished life. Here is a book of frosty magic, wings of light, and the enchanting music of wisdom. With characteristically honest and beautiful prose, Mason has given us a gift that will warm hearts and kindle contemplation. These are stories that both refresh and rebuke. Read them and be awakened to joy." Christmas parables from Canada
By Violet Nesdoly
Mike Mason (Canadian author of The Mystery of Marriage, Champagne for the Soul and the Blue Umbrella fantasy series for kids) has a personal tradition of writing a Christmas story every year. This book is 21 of those stories, collected into a "wonder-full" volume of tales, as different from each other as each Christmas we live is one-of-a-kind. Some stories are short, others long, some playful, others serious, some fairy-tale-like, others as real as photographs. What binds them all together, though is the way each reflects some facet of the deepest meaning of the season.

From the earliest dated, 1981's "Christmas Rocks"--in which the narrator and his friend, weary of the commercialism of a Winnipeg mall, drive to Gimli to choose a unique water-lucent rock for each person on their list--to 2014's "In the stillness of the Night"--set in Hope BC with a local tourist attraction, the Othello Tunnels, playing a major role--these tales are recognizably Canadian, yet have a universal, parable quality to them that sets them beyond time and place.

The two that touch me most deeply are "Born with Wings"--about a sick baby expected to live just hours, born on Christmas day. Any parent who has lost a baby to miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal death will relate to this poignant, tastefully told tale and its Christmas message.

The other favorite is the 1984 tale that closes the collection, "Bound for Glory." Its tame yet mysterious beginning:

"A light rain was falling as I set off across the platform. ... It was Christmas Eve, close to midnight, and the station was unusually busy, though not with the bustle of a daylight rush hour but with the trance-like commotion of darkness..." Kindle Location 2939.

soon reveals a carload of citizens fleeing for the border, among them a couple with a newborn baby. Enter soldiers with guns, making threats and culling group by group from the coach. Of course there is a surprise at the destination.

Stories in this book have been read at the Vancouver Pacific Theatre's annual Christmas Presence programs. Now that they are available to all of us, they're sure to enhance the Christmases of many more individuals and groups.

Touching and insightful stories
By theguy
I've enjoyed Mike Mason's writing for a long time. This is a collection of his Christmas stories, and there is something for everyone here. Mason has an unusual combination of writing styles - sometimes it's down-home and folksy, almost Norman Rockwell. Then he hits you with some fundamental insight that you didn't see coming. Some of these stories are deeply touching, others more lighthearted. My personal favorite was "In the Stillness of the Night" which draws such believable characters in a short time. You finish that story about awkwardness and love and beauty and you feel like you've read a novel - that's how deep it goes. I recommend this book.

Wonderful collection of stories of wonder and redemption
By David M. Longstreet
Wonderful collection of stories of wonder and redemption. Some riotously humorous; others solemn. Several that only start reflection that continues well beyond Christmas.

Francesca Woodman: Works from the Sammlung Verbund, by Betsy Berne, Johannes Binotto

This volume--the most comprehensive monograph published on Francesca Woodman to date--considers her enigmatic photography in the light of the tradition of the tableau vivant and also explores for the first time her poetic use of props (mirror, gloves, wallpaper, etc.) as well as her unusual staging of space. Featuring 80 photographs and 20 previously unpublished works from the collection Sammlung Verbund in Vienna, it is the first publication ever to reproduce all of Woodman’s photographs in their original sizes, authentically reconstructing her idiosyncratic technique of placing the image on the photographic paper. Woodman’s stark, black-and-white photographs explore an intense curiosity and ambivalence toward the feminine self, but her often playful, surreal and symbolic gestures also demonstrate her ability to incorporate elements of humor into her otherwise sober iconography. This volume unifies all of these themes in her work under the broad concept of tableau vivant, showing how Woodman radically reimagined that tradition. It also includes the first detailed and illustrated biography of her life.
Francesca Woodman (1958–1981) was born into an artistic family and began to develop her interest and skill in photography during her early teenage years. She produced a distinct and original body of work in under a decade. Woodman committed suicide in 1981 at the age of 22. In the years following her death, Woodman’s work has achieved widespread critical acclaim.

Review
How many books devoted to Francesca Woodman do we need? Francesca Woodman: Works from the Sammlung Verbund closely follows the organization by periods and places employed by the 2012 Museum of Modern Art (San Francisco) exhibition catalogue, and its plate section repeats much of that book, with the addition of some pictures by the artist as a teenager. One nude-self portrait shows Woodman entwined with the roots of a tree, eerily evoking Ana Mendieta crossed with Ophelia. But a decision to print the reproductions in four-colour black and white, instead of the finer-resolution black and white of teh earlier book, leaves the images here less crisp and lacking the spooky dark glamour captured by SF MOMA'S catalogue. Because the new volume reproduces mostly posthumour prints we dont get tho see the idiosyncratic and revealing captions Woodman wrote on some of her photos, like the scrawled title appearing under the cockeyed print of the iconic 'On being and angel #1, 1977.' And since she became an angel, and has subsequently become a saint, it makes a difference whether she touched these relics. (Christopher Lyon Bookforum)

In the wake of her death, Woodman’s photographs ― haunting black-and-white images, which examine her own body and ambivalence toward it ― have received much critical acclaim. Yet a new exhibit, currently on display at Vienna’s Sammlung Verbund gallery, and corresponding book (out next month) argues against popular interpretations of Woodman’s images that foreshadow her premature demise. In an introductory essay, the critic Elisabeth Bronfen disputes Peggy Phelan’s suggestion that Woodman’s obsession with blurred renditions of her own figure are “understood as a way to rehearse her own death,” asserting instead: “By resolutely dedicating herself to the fragility of her own appearance as a photographic rendition, Woodman highlights the very inexorable inconsistency that ties the vitality of artistic work to the transience of life.” (Erica Schwiegershausen New York Magazine)

About the Author

Elisabeth Bronfen is professor of English and American studies at the University of Zurich and the Global Distinguished Professor of German at New York University. She is the author of several books, including, most recently, "Night Passages: Philosophy, Literature, and Film."

Compares Favorably with 2006 Phaidon Book in Five Ways, But Unfavorably in Nine Ways
By ReviewerWhoPrefersToBeAnonymous
Francesca Woodman was a photographer who committed suicide in 1981 at the age of 22. The dust jacket blurb of this book says in part "Produced in conjunction with the first major American exhibition of the artist's work in more than two decades [at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and at New York's Guggenheim Museum], this catalog is a landmark reconsideration of Woodman for the twenty-first century." I'll compare it with the 2006 book published by Phaidon that is also titled "Francesca Woodman".

Here is a list of five ways in which this book compares favorably with the Phaidon book: (1) The inside of the dust jacket has a cool reproduction of the right part of the diazotype entitled "Caryatid, New York, 1980." See Customer Image. (2) The paper is an elegant off-white color, instead of the harsh white of Phaidon. (3) The reproductions of the prints are at the original size whenever possible, as opposed to Phaidon which reproduces some photos larger and some photos smaller than the originals. See Customer Image. (4) The four essays on pages 166-213 are together better than the Phaidon book's 66-page essay "Scattered in Space and Time" by Chris Townsend which rambles considerably. For me, the most interesting essay (because it didn't overlap much with essays in other books on Woodman) was "The Geometry of Time: Some Notes on Francesca Woodman's Video" on pages 196-203. (5) I didn't do an exact count, but approximately one-third of this book's 180 photos are not found in the Phaidon book. (In fact, the dust jacket blurb says that this book has "many previously unpublished photographs," although inside the book one cannot tell which photos have or have not been published before.) Some of the not-in-Phaidon photos grab your attention, like the one on page 101 showing the back of a woman with a brooch somehow attached to her palm (which is reproduced on the back of the dust jacket), or like the one on pages 162-163 in which Woodman poses nude in front of her birth certificate.

Here is a list of nine ways in which this book compares unfavorably with the Phaidon book: (1) This book has only four mostly-small images from Woodman's early work (1972-1975, such as "Self-Portrait at Thirteen"). The Phaidon book has early work on pages 23 and 75-83. (2) The reader cannot appreciate the sequencing of the pages in the two artists' books "Portrait of a Reputation" and "Some Disordered Interior Geometries." The 2006 Phaidon book contained thumbnail images of the entire two books on pages 236-239. (3) The photos on pages 69 and 100 are clearly related to each other, having been shot against the same wall, and involving dirt on the model's body. It is unclear why they are not on the same page spread. Same goes for the photos on pages 68 and 86, and on pages 78 and 98 (both from "Several Cloudy Days"). (4) Some of the 180 thumbnail-size photos in the "Catalogue of the Exhibition" on pages 204-219 are not reproduced at a larger size elsewhere in the book. (5) Some of the 180 photos in the "Catalogue of the Exhibition" are reproduced at a larger size in the "Essays" section, but the catalogue does not specify the pages. For example, a larger version of #2 is found on page 178, #24 ("Polka Dots") on p.168, #14 on p.189, #46 ("Directing Lightning #1") on p.176, #71 on p.186, and #176 on p.177. See Customer Image. (6) The Phaidon book has some memorable photos not found in this book, for example the one in which Woodman is holding the object that looks like a fish skeleton behind her back (Phaidon p.194). (7) The Phaidon book's postcards, studies (sketches), extracts from Woodman's journal, and "To Tell The Truth" essay by Woodman's friend give interesting insights into Woodman's methods. (8) Although the bibliography contains more recent articles than the Phaidon book, it also excludes some older articles that the Phaidon book has. (9) There is no index.

In summary, if you want to learn about this fascinating photographer, buy both this book and the Phaidon book from Amazon.com!

Inside a Darkened Mind
By Grady Harp
Francesca Woodman (1958 - 1981) is one of those artists whose potential was never realized fully - she died, the result of suicide, in 1981 at the age of 22. But the images she created with the camera continue to haunt the viewer and this portfolio puts it all together very well. Woodman's small photographs deal with the feminine mystique, an acceptable way of describing the strange poses she created with women models - including herself. There is a flavor here of surrealism (especially in the image f a seated girl with a handing mirage of a feminine body nearby.

It is difficult to grasp the degree of creativity necessary to create some 800 images in the course of the nine years during which she embraced her art. These images are not suggestive of Dorothea Lange or Diane Arbus, but they tend to have the same sort of response from the viewer - intense reality that becomes surreal in the context in which the statement is made. Her language is definitely her own, a mixture of dark motifs, sinister atmospheres, the use of 'sets' that are well worn interiors with the accompanying used and abused accouterments, and a sense of alienation, likely not dissimilar form the fragile mind state at her demise.

The book is a well-designed catalogue with sensitive essays and the largest collection of the works of this fascinating photographer artist that has been published. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, February 12

Elementary matrix theory, by Howard Whitley Eves

The usefulness of matrix theory as a tool in disciplines ranging from quantum mechanics to psychometrics is widely recognized, and courses in matrix theory are increasingly a standard part of the undergraduate curriculum.
This outstanding text offers an unusual introduction to matrix theory at the undergraduate level. Unlike most texts dealing with the topic, which tend to remain on an abstract level, Dr. Eves' book employs a concrete elementary approach, avoiding abstraction until the final chapter. This practical method renders the text especially accessible to students of physics, engineering, business and the social sciences, as well as math majors. Although the treatment is fundamental — no previous courses in abstract algebra are required — it is also flexible: each chapter includes special material for advanced students interested in deeper study or application of the theory.
The book begins with preliminary remarks that set the stage for the author's concrete approach to matrix theory and the consideration of matrices as hypercomplex numbers. Dr. Eves then goes on to cover fundamental concepts and operations, equivalence, determinants, matrices with polynomial elements, similarity and congruence. A final optional chapter considers matrix theory from a generalized or abstract viewpoint, extending it to arbitrary number rings and fields, vector spaces and linear transformations of vector spaces. The author's concluding remarks direct the interested student to possible avenues of further study in matrix theory, while an extensive bibliography rounds out the book.
Students of matrix theory will especially appreciate the many excellent problems (solutions not provided) included in each chapter, which are not just routine calculation exercises, but involve proof and extension of the concepts and material of the text. Scientists, engineers, economists and others whose work involves this important area of mathematics, will welcome the variety of special types of matrices and determinants discussed, which make the book not only a comprehensive introduction to the field, but a valuable resource and reference work.

Not Linear Algebra
By A Customer
I love this book. It contains a wealth of information on basic matrix theory that one almost never gets in the classroom or typical undergraduate texts. I never realised how rich the theory of matrix theory was until I read this book. Bare in mind, however, that this is not a text on linear algebra . . . the author does touch upon the subject, but even then it is linear algebra in the context of matrix theory and not matrices in the context of linear algebra. This is rather an old approach, but one I think that is very enlightening. The author touches on advanced topics such as Lie products, Hamilton products, tensor products and so on. I this way, the student learns that the traditional way of multiplying matrices is not the only way, but simply the way that linear algebra chooses to make use of the matrices. The level of the book is undegraduate, so that any intelligent high school student should be able to get much out of the book. No real math background is required, although it would be helpful. Theory is paid attention to, but a great deal of detail is also given worked out problems, making it ideal for math students who don't yet feel comfortable with advanced theoretical math.

Review of Elementary Matric Theory

This book was a waste of money. The author does not know how to communicate with an average reader. So much for calling itself "Elementary" ...
