Ellin is author of Talk About Understanding: Rethinking Classroom Talk to Enhance Understanding, To Understand: New Horizons in Reading Comprehension, co-author of Comprehension Going Forward and of Mosaic of Thought: The Power of Comprehension Strategy Instruction, 2nd edition as well as numerous chapters for professional books and journals on the teaching of reading as well as education policy journals. Ellin Oliver Keene has been a classroom teacher, staff developer, non-profit director and adjunct professor of reading and writing. For sixteen years she directed staff development initiatives at the Denver-based Public Education & Business Coalition. This gave me ideas to try in my classroom right away in the first chapter. The lesson in that first chapter went very well and really helped my students understand clearly and practice that deeper thinking about the books they were reading.

Outstanding Literacy Resource

Talk About Understanding is a dynamic instructional tool for literacy teachers...and for content-specific teachers who want to increase the use of literacy-based strategies to move students to deeper content knowledge and appreciation for learning. The dvd is an added bonus that shows Keene modeling effective engagement techniques. This book is in excellent condition, it shipped very fast, and it is a book I will continue to reference in my professional practice.

TINKU ACHARYA, PhD, is Chief Technology Officer, Avisere, Inc., Tucson, Arizona. Dr. Acharya is also Adjunct Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, Arizona State University. He is the inventor of ninety-seven awarded U.S. and European patents and coauthor of Data Mining: Multimedia, Soft Computing, and Bioinformatics (Wiley), Information Technology, and JPEG2000 Standard for Image Compression: Concepts, Algorithms, and VLSI Architectures (Wiley).

AJOY K. RAY, PhD, is Senior Corporate Research Scientist, Avisere, Inc., Arizona, and a Professor of Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. A distinguished teacher with twenty-five years of experience, Professor Ray has coauthored two other books, Advanced Microprocessors and Peripherals and Information Technology: Principles and Applications. In addition, he has published extensively in international journals.

Includes the new JPEG 2000 Standard

The applications for image processing technology are increasing rapidly as computers become more powerful. Images enable a doctor to view the inside of the body in a manner that gives him useful information he could never decipher out of the raw data. With the increase in the demand for images, so has the need for information on digital image processing.

This book begins with the image sensor and continues through the programming techniques that are applicable . This includes both processing the image for automatic analysis (fingerprint or facial feature analysis), or presenting the image for human evaluation (a digital camera). The book is primarily interested in still images rather than video.

The early chapters in the book are oriented to the basic technology of image processing that are used in virtually all applications. This includes a chapter on color imagry and others on the mathematical tranforms. Later chapters are broken down more to application areas such as biomedical, and satellite sensors and imageries.

Finally the last chapters discuss image compression to minimize image storage space and transmission times. This includes a full discussion on the new JPEG 2000 standard. One of the authors, Dr. Acharya was a member of the committee developing this standard.

This book is suitable for use as a text in a formal setting, or for the individual who may be interested.

The only book that shows you how to create luxurious Colefax & Fowler interiors in miniature. 'The Yellow Drawing Room' is a superb variant of Nancy Lancaster's famous, full-scale classic. If you like stately English houses, this book is a Must. Not a book for beginners.

A Must for the Do-It-Yourself Miniaturist

Jessica Ridley has miniatures in her genes. After all, her grandfather was the designer and builder of Queen Mary's Dollhouse. :-) She is a miniaturist and faux painting artist who incorporates her specialty in her projects, giving the reader alternatives to the usual approach to dollhouse decorating -- namely siding for the exterior and wallpaper for the interior.
She teaches techniques for faux finishes, customizing and building furniture and accessories, as well as using interesting and unusual materials. The instructions are illustrated with plenty of color photographs, so you can see how the project looks at the different stages.
I highly recommend this book because I think that it stirs up your creative juices and inspires the miniaturist to try something new and personalized in their projects, while at the same time saving money. Who could ask for more!
