About the Author
Dr. Richard H. Barnett has been instructing in the area of embedded microcontrollers for the past eighteen years and currently consults actively in the field. Prior to his tenure as a professor of Electrical Engineering Technology at Purdue University, he spent ten years as an engineer in the aerospace electronics industry. Dr. Barnett¿s teaching awards include the Charles B. Murphy Award as one of the best teachers at Purdue University and Purdue University¿s Book of Great Teachers, a list of the 225 most influential teachers over Purdue¿s entire history.

Sarah Cox has a Bachelor of Science degree in both Computer and Electrical Engineering from Purdue University. She is currently the Director of Software Development at Progressive Resources LLC , where she has developed software for projects ranging from small consumer products to industrial products and test equipment. These projects have spanned several fields, among them automotive, medical, entertainment, child development, public safety/education, sound and image compression, and construction. In addition, Ms. Cox has been listed as co-inventor on numerous patent applications.

Senior Operating Member Progressive Resources LLC Mr. O'Cull received a B.S. degree from the School of Electrical Engineering Technology at Purdue University. His career path started in the design of software and control systems for CNC (computer numeric controlled) machine tools. From there he moved to other opportunities in electronics engineering and software development for vision systems, laser-robotic machine tools, medical diagnostic equipment, and commercial and consumer products, and he has been listed as inventor/co-inventor on numerous patents. Mr. O'Cull started Progressive Resources in 1995 after several years of working in Electrical and Software Engineering and Engineering management. Progressive Resources LLC (http://www.prllc.com) specializes in innovative commercial, industrial, and consumer product development. Progressive Resources is a Microchip consultant member since 1995.

Excellent. Only small complaints....

The first chapter of this book is the most concise, articulate tutorial on embedded C that I have yet found. The second chapter is an equally well written description of the AVR architecture including examples (with code) of how to use peripherals such as timers, serial communication (UART and SPI), analog to digital conversion, etc. These two chapters alone made this book a good value for me and it is organized well enough to make an invaluable reference for the future.

The third and fourth chapters are specific to the Codevision compiler. The evaluation version of Codevision on the included CD has a limited code size and cannot be used to compile the final project in chapter 5, and this is the source of my only complaint. For the price of this book, it would be even more attractive if it included a coupon for a discount on the complete version of the Codevision compiler/IDE (at least one of the authors is from the company that offers Codevision).

That said, Codevision appears to be a very good package. All C compilers for the AVR target have differences so it was necessary to focus on one. But for my purposes and budget, I instead chose to use the freely distributed AVR-GCC compiler (search WinAVR), so the differences must be kept in mind while studying the code examples (e.g. bit-level I/O port access, memory sectioning). This is not a major obstacle, however, and the final project in chapter 5 still functions as an excellent description of the process of project development, from concept to final test.

If you want to learn embedded C, strongly consider buying this book.

If you want to learn embedded C and the AVR line of microcontrollers specifically, buy this book.

Missing CD

The material is well written, but approximately half the book is written in the reference to the toolchain, that was not included with the book. Not sure if the seller/publisher removed the CD because the software is no longer supported, or some other reason.

Great for Beginners and as a reference for Advanced Programmers

In a word, this book is Awesome! It takes the reader through beginner to advanced programming of the AVR in C and provides an extensive list of projects while remaining just abstract enough to allow the reader to translate the code and concepts into many different but similar real-world problems. The first section also provides a quick recap on basic C programming for people (like me) who program infrequently enough in C to forget basic concepts.

He left then returned to claim his man

Two years ago Noah left without a trace taking Ramons heart with him.

Not knowing why he left Ramon cant move on, he is constantly reminded of him especially as his brothers is married to Noahs sister.

All of a sudden he returns but before Ramon will give his heart again he wants answers.

i loved this 5th instalment of the McKenzie brothers, and how we get to see them again. There are scene that left me needing a cold shower, amd parts that made me laugh out loud amd OMG the hot tub scene (i am not saying what happens as you will need to read for yourself but OMG)

Lexi buchanan did an amazing job again

I have loved all the mackenzie books, seeing Ramon finally get Noah warms my heart. I have had and sadly lost many gay male friends over the years so few of them ever found that happiness. I hope this book inspires everyone gay straight or any other orientation to never give up until they find this kind of happiness because we all deserve it and to hell with any moron that disagrees.

Noah and Ramon were electric together.

The McKenzie Brothers series got lost on my tbr while I was waiting for the next release, but I'm happy I finally started reading it again. I skipped Entice because I just couldn't resist reading Ramon's story first. Major m/m lover right here.

This was a good story and the steam level was very high, which I loved! Noah and Ramon were electric together and I loved the scenes that had just them in it. Not that I didn't like the family parts of the book, because they were great too and I liked that this family was so close. But still, when Ramon and Noah were alone together I could feel the heat coming off of the pages and I was captivated.

I did have some issues with the story, but that was mostly because I couldn't remember much of what happened in the previous books or with the other characters. It says this can be read as a standalone, and if you aren't extra curious like me, then it can. But for me the little things that were mentioned about other character made me a tad confused because I just needed to know what was going on with them. Even with Ramon and Noah I felt like I was missing part of their beginning story.

Overall, this was a good story and I'm glad I finally got back to this family. I'll definitely be going back to read Entice and maybe do some re-reads about the rest of the McKenzie brothers.

He started writing “Captive retribution” during his senior year at the United States Military Academy and finished it during a cycle break in the Mountain Phase of Ranger School. He claims that this is the only book that’s ever been written during Ranger School, but has no idea if that’s actually true. He currently lives in Colorado Springs, CO.

We Stop Looking For The Monsters Under Our Beds...

Herrick's "Captive Retribution" is a bold, if at times cliche, entry into what could spiral into a very unique and eerily plausible universe. Herrick manages to give us two characters on seemingly opposite ends of the spectrum; one, a fresh, happy college graduate, eager to show himself as something of a prodigy in the intelligence world, and the other, a man scarred and out to seek vengeance for wrongs done to his family; one who hasn't experienced the first's happiness in quite some time. Upon introduction, Herrick's protagonists seem one dimensional, and lifted from the summer blockbusters of the past 3 decades.
Upon digging deeper, however, and especially during the novel's second act, one begins to realize that perhaps that was by the author's design; the characters then develop into something else, almost in parallel to one another, and this metamorphosis-like change continues through the remainder of the novel, leaving the reader eager to find what has grown inside each's figurative cocoon.
Where Herrick's work truly shines is his use of supporting characters, who provide a colorful setting into which the two darker protagonists are placed. However, while some add a certain grittiness reminiscent of Herrick's own military past, and others add a twistedly fitting sense of humor, some do go under-developed, perhaps leaving room for more exposure in future novels. Herrick's antagonists, who run the gamut from terrorist to crime kingpin to counterfeiter, provide an equally vibrant backdrop for his heroes (a term the novel uses loosely) to paint black. Or red. Depending on if you prefer your blood dried and clotted or fresh and dripping.
Structurally, Herrick's first foray into literature is sound, and seems to develop alongside the plot. The use of repeated phrases walks a fine line between catchphrase and a lack of literary creativity, but in doing so, he develops an almost colloquial relationship with the reader, who by the end of the novel can almost finish a character's...sandwiches.
"Captive Retribution" certainly a story worth the money, with enough Army lingo and imagery to make it all too identifiable to anyone remotely familiar with the contemporary Global War on Terrorism, but intriguing and fresh enough to leave you wanting to know more about not just Herrick's universe, but the real one that inspired it. And, with a certain humorous and violent flair, Herrick inspires just a little fear that you may not want to know what truly drives either of those two worlds.

Haven't read it yet but the author is so cute!

Mike Herrick is the man of my dreams. Just look at that powerful chin! That is one adorable Ranger.

The book? Haven't read it yet. But if it's anything like "Magic" Mike Herrick, it will be exciting, funny, and sleepy. Also, I like the cover art.

I look forward to reading the book and the money goes to charity. It's only 5 bucks! Don't be a cheap bastard! Think of the children! (But not the British children)

Fun and interesting read. Very plausible set-up to explain how the characters reached their current state. The story was exciting and also threw in some comedy without detracting from the story line. I can't wait for the sequel!

About the Author
