This takes the form of a translation of the Mi'raj Nama (The Book of the Prophet Muhammad's Ascent to Heaven), a short treatise in Persian generally attributed to Avicenna.

The text concludes with an investigation of the literary dimension Avicenna's allegorical theory and practice by examining his use of description metaphor. Allegory and Philosophy in Avicenna is an original and important work that breaks new ground by applying the techniques of modern literary criticism to the study of Medieval Islamic philosophy. About the Author
Jon M. Conrad is Professor of Resource Economics in the Department of Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University. He taught at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, from 1973 to 1977, joining the Cornell faculty in 1978. His research interests focus on the use of dynamic optimization techniques to manage natural resources and environmental quality. He has published articles in the Journal of Political Economy, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, the Canadian Journal of Economics, Land Economics, Marine Resource Economics, Biomathematics, Ecological Economics, Natural Resource Modeling and the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, where he served as an associate editor. He is coauthor, with Colin Clark, of the text Natural Resource Economics: Notes and Problems (Cambridge University Press, 1987) and past President of the Resource Modeling Association. Cambridge University Press published the first edition of Resource Economics in 1999.

Recently I finished reading Dr. Lyle’s book, Forensics for Dummies. Truth be told, I bought it because I am an author who likes infuse horror with mystery so crime is a mainstay in my genera. When I was in college, I studied law enforcement and had the opportunity to work as a law enforcement officer on the corrections side. This was a good many years ago and when I was writing my last novel, I realized some of my information was somewhat dated.

Dr. Lyle has done a great job in writing an easy to use guide on the basics of forensics. There were a lot of things I already knew. For example, I already knew some basic information on evidence collection. But I still read that section as I found it interesting.

He does a great job explaining some of the basics of pathogens, different types of gunshot wounds, and autopsies. There were a lot of things in the book that I either didn’t know, or had forgotten.

I really found the section on establishing the time of death particularly interesting. As a fiction author, dealing with time lines can be difficult and it is helpful if you can have something particularly gruesome to explain it.

I found this book easy to read, easy to cross reference, and just the right amount of science and places where Hollywood just gets it wrong. It was well written and logically organized. I would highly recommend Forensics for Dummies to anyone interested in the topic of forensics. I know that I will be referencing this book in future writing.

A Perfect Forensics Guide for Writers!

As a thriller and horror writer, I'm always on the lookout for books that bring together information in a way that is simple and accessible but rich enough that I can get a real feel and understanding of the subject at hand. If a writer doesn't understand the subject, he or she is likely to mess it up or end up explaining the research instead of becoming knowledgeable enough to write about it in an unassuming way. Forensics for Dummies has fulfilled all my forensics needs - and I have a lot of needs - admirably.

Like other writers, I look things up on line, but to be accurate, you can't rely on wiki or other single sources. I need a good book - to confirm accuracy.. With Forensics for Dummies - written by a real M.D. - I barely even bother with on-line look-ups because this book is complete enough for my needs. (I don't write procedurals but I suspect it would make that breed of writer smile as well.)

Dr. Lyle's book covers everything, beginning with 'Cracking Open the Case' which includes four chapters on understanding what forensic science is, knowing how teams are comprised, basic evidence collection, and the basic workings of various types of criminal minds. Then it moves on to Part 2. It covers analysis of evidence, talking about everything from fingerprints, blood spatter, footprints and other impressions, and how to tell if a fire is arson or not. Three is all about examining a body - cause of death, autopsies, ID, time of death, trauma and asphyxiation. That's my favorite.

In Part Four, Lyle explains how crime labs and analysis works and includes lots of detail on blood and other fluids, DNA, toxicology, trace evidence, firearms evidence, and even examining documents - false confessions and so forth. In Part Five, we have the always-welcome Dummies Guides' Part of Tens. Chapters include examples of famous forensic cases, ways Hollywood misleads, and top forensic careers.

Each of these parts and chapters contain concise explanations and sidebars covering every facet of forensics I have ever needed, and so much more. It's actually loaded with plot ideas it's so comprehensive. Written clearly and engagingly, this is a Dummies guide at its finest - they're always useful but this one really rocks for me. I can't tell you how many times I've had to go spelunking for info on what kind of M.E. or coroner is right for a particular book and how various examiners interact with police and civilians. How do I depict a technician's job? Am I overlooking anything or making mistakes I'll regret? It's all here. Every bit. I've been reading it for pleasure - and knowledge, not just looking things up.

I'm sure this is a great book for people considering forensics as a career or for the casual reader who wants to better understand books or the crazy things presented on TV. It will let you know what's right and what's wrong. But for any writer who ever gets into crime, Forensics for Dummies is solid gold. It's like having a living, breathing expert on call all the time. I absolutely love this book!

Whenever I take an interest in a subject matter I know next-to-nothing about, I generally look for a “for Dummies” book to build my base of knowledge and it usually satisfies my craving for information. Several friends in law enforcement (as well as all those crime dramas on television these days) sparked a desire to learn more about forensics and I decided to give FORENSICS FOR DUMMIES a try. I found Douglas Lyle’s effectively detailed summarization of a complex scientific field to be fascinating, entertaining and surprisingly easy to consume.

I first sought guidance from a “Dummies” book almost 30 years ago when I purchased my first computer and was trying to get a grip on understanding DOS. While the series has grown exponentially over the years, all the books I’ve read have proven to be a valuable educational resource; FORENSICS FOR DUMMIES is no exception. Lyle’s presentation of forensics is well-organized, succinct and extremely informative. He manages to put a light touch on a rather dark profession (studying the dead) that manages to keep things interesting and relatable from beginning to end. What Lyle clearly wants to defuse is the image of sure-fire high tech methods cranking out details in fancy labs that we see on the myriad of CSI television shows. Step-by-step, Lyle guides readers on a journey that clearly illustrates how the field of forensics relies more on human involvement than any futuristic computer program.

FORENSICS FOR DUMMIES is methodically organized into five parts that progressively build to form a well-balanced tableau of forensics. Lyle serves the “who, how and why” of forensics to give a basic understanding of the field (Part I) before venturing to the crime scene, where readers are informed about analyzing all sorts of evidence, like bloodstains, fingerprints, footprints, tire tracks, tool marks, etc.(Part II). Examining the body (Part III) is where the book gets into the guts of forensics (both literally and figuratively) by way of the medical examiner (ME). This segment of the book is quite fascinating and again illustrates that the human mind is still the most effective tool in finding critical evidence. Part IV visits the crime lab where the more modern methods of examination are practiced (DNA analysis, toxicology testing and analyzation of fibers and firearms evidence). The final segment of the book (Part V) Lyle highlights 10 iconic cases where forensics played a significant role, 10 careers to consider in the field of forensics and 10 ways television misrepresents the field of forensics. Typical with “Dummies” book series, this book is peppered with the “Dummies” icons that inform readers of key points, a closer look at a specific issue, historical and case studies. I felt the case study side-bars both interesting and effective in illustrating forensics methods described being put to good use … the stories, by themselves, are obscure and entertaining (ironically, the DNA benchmark case of OJ Simpson is rarely mentioned in the book).

What I liked most about this book is that the author never makes the science boring or confusing. Lyle does an excellent job simplifying complex information and presenting it in a manner that is not only easy to understand, but oddly enjoyable to read (considering the subject matter). Despite the need to dispel a great deal of scientific minutia, the reader is never bogged down by it … the material flows at a rapid pace. The book has a way of providing answers to issues most have thought, but never asked about, like: how to get footprints from snow and analyzing pieces of a body to determine anything from age and sex to cause of death and estimated time of death. After reading it, I definitely feel I have a better understanding of what I see/hear on television crime dramas or the crime reports I see on the news or read in the paper. I can see FORENSICS FOR DUMMIES being a useful tool for crime book authors and a sure catalyst for anyone considering a career in investigative law enforcement.

FORENSICS FOR DUMMIES is yet another solid installment of the “for Dummies” series. Well-written and concise, anyone with a passing interest in the subject matter will enjoy the details this book offers and how enjoyable it is to read.

POWERFUL, ORIGINAL- perfect balance of scholarly & personal

WOW. An EXTREMELY well-written book. Innovative, original- I can't imagine anyone doing a better job discussing the myriad issues involved. Mr. Mennella explores Near Death Experience, the notions of reincarnation and karma, past life regression hypnosis, Michael Newton's LBL hypnotherapy, metaphysics, religion and much more. I'm no stranger to these subjects (have studied them for many years as a seeker, academic and clinician) and Mennella does a SPLENDID job. His knowledge is encyclopedic in scope. With full references and citations.

It's no small feat to cover the nitty-gritty of subjects in an entertaining way- Mennella summarizes research and findings core to the issues of life after death and reincarnation, along with the implications NOW, in one's current life. Best of all, Mennella evinces that rare ability to shift from the scholarly to the personal with ease. Woven throughout is self-disclosure. He began as a true skeptic, with a scientist's rigor and appreciation of the scientific method, and it informed his analyses and personal experimentation. He identifies holes in approaches (a few of which hadn't occurred to me), then proceeds to address them, both logically and from what the data show, details his personal experience with them, and finally, offers alternative explanations for some "stickier" phenomena.

At each step he applied tenets to his own life. We're privy not only to his intellect and scholarship, but his life, his personal struggles- his heart of hearts. Mennella's scientific scrutiny and undergoing of Michael Newton's Life Between Life Hypnotherapy are each worth the price of the book- but you get a LOT more. Independent analyses of these perspectives by someone with his diverse knowledge and skillsets (each complementing, informing the others) are sorely needed. Even if you're well-versed in the issues and approaches, a-hah moments abound. Not only was it a highly pleasurable read, but I came away feeling both inspired and the wiser for it- Mennella has MUCH to add to the discourse. Highest recommendation!

original and enthusiastic and entertaining take on the theory of everything.

This book was so full of information on a variety on subjects, I found myself admiring the author despite myself. I loved his intro to the higher math within, he would make a good math teacher with his enthusiasm and his "keep reading-you can do this!" approach to physics and science.
The book was a bit all over the map , sometimes crazy , and sometimes hard to wade through, it could have used some dumbing down and some good editing by 100 pages or so, but he did his best to back up his theories. . I found myself agreeing with the author on a lot of points, but not on others. My own idea of God and the universe as one was similar to his, but I never would have the nerve to turn it into a thesis. Koodos to Mr. Mennella. for trying and being an original thinker . As the author points out, the bible teaches us that God said "let there be light" ...and the scientists say the cosmos sprung out of nothing in a giant explosion of light.. It was refreshing to see someone to point out in writing that the scientists are saying the same thing , they just call it the big bang . Three stars for making me think and daring to try. Most books don't.

A Profound Work!

This book is profound, both in its ideas and its research into the meaning of our human existence. An amazing variety of perspectives are used in the author's attempt to answer the fundamental questions of our existence. These include "NDEs" (near-death experiences), "OBEs" (out-of-body experiences), hypnotic regression, and memories of past lives. The author also refers to authorities in science, mathematics, as well as many famous authors.
One of the things that makes this book so special is that the author does not try to establish himself as some kind of daunting authority. He freely admits that he doesn't know all of the answers. Although he has a Bachelors degree in Mathematics and a Masters degree in Computers, Mr. Mennella presents himself as just a fellow human being who is searching for answers.
Despite this humility, Mr. Mennella is successful at providing his reader with a very wide spectrum of ideas that help to explain both our lives and the "afterlife". This is not a book containing only theories and abstractions. It is abundant with clinical studies in verifiable experiences, including those of the author, which provide authenticity to the writer's explanations.
The impressive questions that Mr. Mennella tackles include why we are born into an earthly life, what is the nature of the "afterlife", how the "afterlife" relates to our lifetime, what is the nature of ultimate "reality", if and how we share in the creative process, and where humanity may be headed.
I don't wish to introduce any "spoilers", so, I won't give away any of the answers suggested by Mr. Mennella. I will, however, say that I find them to be highly credible as answers to life's most difficult questions.
The only difficulty that I found in the reading of Mr. Mennella's book is that it is sometimes a bit rambling and somewhat redundant. I believe this to be, however, the result of the enormity of the content that is covered. He actually does a pretty good job of maintaining coherency for the breadth of the subject matter it involves.
As an aside, I was quite impressed with Mr. Mennella's descriptions of his own sessions while under hypnosis. They are interesting, engrossing, and revealing. He also includes some sections on mathematics. Fear not! He makes the mathematics understandable and simple enough, even for someone, such as myself, who is not nearly as advanced as he is in this subject. I have never read another author who could parallel Mr. Mannella's ability to present such a diversity of practical experiences and multiple viewpoints to support his writing.
This brings to mind the enormous bibliography he supplies. I was dumbfounded! I love bibliographies because they provide the opportunity to read other author's books on the same subjects. There are twenty fives pages of it, including well over three hundred entries! Here's another proof of this man's humility in not claiming to be some kind of final authority on these subjects.
All that I can say in parting is that I highly recommend this book. It is well worth reading. Be sure that you don't miss it!

This book is a prime example of how God uses children in such amazing ways!!! Akiane is gifted beyond belief. Her art is extraordinary and her poetry is so far beyond her years. Thank You, Lord, for allowing us to share in this precious life!!!
