I'm Dave, never David. I'm a Customer Service Assistant at the Co-operative and was once in training to become an Estate Agent. We don't talk about that. I've been writing for most of my life, from blogs about my dog and my son, to long-winded Facebook statuses, to half-finished novels, but Dragons is truly my life's work, so it's fitting that it is the first one that I bring to publication. Nine years in the writing, I've lost it completely to a virus, rewritten it, lost it again to a cup of coffee spilled on a laptop, had it magically retrieved, decided that I hated it while editing, and rewritten it again from scratch. Don't worry, I've finally learned how to back it up, and Book Two should come along much sooner than nine years from now. In the future you can expect several more Dragons of Lovana novels from me, a number of other books in the Fantasy genre, and my name to appear as Editor on a few more. I've immersed myself in Fantasy, and I'm here to stay.

Great first book by a new author! It starts of a tad rough "feeling", but soon the author hits his stride and the story takes off. When I reached the end, I wanted to shake the author until the next book was in my hand! (Or kindle app, actually...)

This is a very professional translation of a lost text from the Vedic tradition of India. This text was found in bundle of palm leaves that were in a library in Mysore, India.

Dr. Freund gives an introduction to the concepts of pure consciousness and enlightenment found in the Vedic Traditio. Then he translates the text which is fundamentally a detailed description of the relationship between the sounds of Vedic Sanskrit and the various Devatas or Gods found in the Vedic tradition.

This relationship between each of the sounds of Vedic sanskrit and their correspondence to the Devas or the laws of nature of the universe may be unique to this text. Therefore it will of interest to those who are interested in the philosophy and religion of India and to those who are interested in holistic descriptions of nature.

Again, this is a professional translation and truly a one-of-a-kind book.

This book was a revelation for me. I never thought of letters of any alphabet in terms of their gender, quality or character, color, forces of nature or deities they might represent. I started reading the book before going to bed and found myself still reading into it at 3 o'clock in the morning. I could not stop reading until I read it all. It is amazing to learn that there is correlation between Sanskrit vowels and numbers, and that words are used to represent numbers to represent vowels...The book is also very well organized in scientific terms. Many thanks to the author Dr. Peter Freund.

A must for Vedic scholars and enthusiasts

This book is fascinating, and one of a kind. Varna Shiksha was never publicly available in any language. Freund tells the story of how he found the text in a library in India written on a bundle of palm leaves, written in an obscure script. He first transcribed the script over to Sanskrit, and then translated it into English. Varna Shiksha is the only place the different qualities of all of the Sanskrit letters are described in such detail. Each Sanskrit letter is associated with different Devatas, colors, and other qualities. Also, the translation of the verses is itself very captivating, in beautiful, carefully-worded language, almost ornamental descriptions. The book should be in every Vedic library as it is foundational to the study of the Vedic literature.

Disappointing

I regret buying this book. It was expensive and offered less than other AP Chemistry review books (e.g. Fast Track to a 5). There are no answers to the FRQ type questions, presumably because they want you to spend even more for the answer key. The answers to the mutliple choice questions are on a small separate card-like sheet which could easily get lost. No explanations are included as they are in Barron's, Princeton Review and Fast Track to a 5. Why not include it in the text? At least one of the answers is wrong too. I also found that quite a few of the multiple choice questions in the sample exams were worded in a confusing way. For instance, one of the photoelectron spectra was presented with the values on the x-axis reversed relative to the way it is usually presented in textbooks and actual AP questions from the College Board website. Another multiple choice question had 2 identical answers. Some questions concern topics that have been eliminated from the new AP Chem coverage. For a book that is supposedly available "only to teachers" one would think it would be better edited and more carefully written. Very disappointed in my purchase and if I had to do it again, I would pass on this book. The two stars are for the nice paper and some of the review chapters which offered decent summaries for the topics covered.

As a Research Reference

Bassett tells the story of Shakespeare's life through the eyes of a fictional boyhood friend, Toby. Toby stays with Shakespeare throughout his whole life and outlives him. Toby is Bassett's device to be able to introduce some personalized elements into what otherwise would be a boring story for most kids. In reality not that much is known about Shakespeare! There are even a whole 14 years of his life that are "lost", where he falls from sight in the historical record.

Though the book is partly fictionalized it still provides good research material for a class unit about Elizabethan England. The backdrop of evolving political change is discussed (Shakespeare's wife, Anne Hathaway, is represented as a Puritan, and Shakespeare's plays were presented to two monarchs of England), the many appearances of the Plague and short life spans in general, the danger of fire, the British love of theatrical entertainment, and the ability of a few to become star actors (and rich) are among the many themes touched upon. The book is accessible to readers with a 700 headword count, for example, classes/students whose vocabulary is not so advanced such as non-native English speakers or younger students.

Together with other sources, this book is useful in sparking interest in the era in which Shakespeare lived and wrote.

ASIDE: Bassett sticks mostly to the facts, but the facts are not many! She does not hint at the debate over the true authorship of Shakespeare's plays. To spark this debate, I can suggest including another book, _Shakespeare's Secret_ by Elise Broach, a contemporary fiction story about a stolen diamond that supposedly traces back several hundred years to Anne Boleyn, mother of Queen Elizabeth I. The protagonist is named after Hero, the beautiful young daughter of Leonato, in Shakespeare's _Much Ado About Nothing_. The name alone, "Hero" for a girl, causes whispers and a flurry of questions in a group of sixth graders!

Dr. Ron Larson is a professor of mathematics at The Pennsylvania State University, where he has taught since 1970. He received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Colorado and is considered the pioneer of using multimedia to enhance the learning of mathematics, having authored over 30 software titles since 1990. Dr. Larson conducts numerous seminars and in-service workshops for math educators around the country about using computer technology as an instructional tool and motivational aid. He is the recipient of the 2014 William Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award for CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTAL FUNCTIONS, the 2013 Text and Academic Authors Association Award for CALCULUS, the 2012 William Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award for CALCULUS: AN APPLIED APPROACH, and the 1996 Text and Academic Authors Association TEXTY Award for INTERACTIVE CALCULUS (a complete text on CD-ROM that was the first mainstream college textbook to be offered on the Internet). Not the best, but it's at least managable.

This book gets a lot of guff for being "bad" but it's honestly pretty standard textbook fair. Chances are, you're not learning directly from the book and you're just doing practice problems anyway. Even the explanations in the book aren't so terrible, though it's definitely geared toward practical applications of calc, trig, and analytical geometry. The word problems are hecka boring, but what word problems aren't?

If You Need To Learn Pre-Calculus, Buy This Book!

This is really an excellent textbook for Pre-Calculus. Very clear organization, with a logical sequence of topics, each building on the last. I really wish my son's high school used this text rather than the one they did. Besides just rote problems using the concepts, this text includes many practical examples across all sciences and engineering in each section and chapter.

Poorly written, misconceptions, overall not worth it

This textbook is not what I expected. I have had better books explain some of the concepts better and more clearly. I have never had an issue understanding math, but this book proves that math can be challenging if you have poor resources. I wouldn't recommend.

About the Author

Loker is Distinguished Professor of Biology, Curator of the Division of Parasites of the Museum of the Southwestern Biology, and Director of the COBRE Center for Evolutionary and Theoretical Immunology at the University of New Mexico where he has taught parasitology and related courses for many years. His research interests focus on the biology of schistosomes.
