the shortest cut, indeed

I really enjoyed this book by Zwanzig. It treats many standard subjects starting from Langevin eq., Fokker Planck eq., to projection operators and mode-coupling theories, etc. Most of the examples demonstrated are elementary, but some of them (heat bath, dipole moments, etc) are treated several times in different chapters with different techniques so that the reader can understand more deeply how these techniques are interconnected. Really enlightening!

An excellent non-equilibrium stat/mech for dummies

This book is not an ideal dictionary of stat/mech as "A modern course in Stat/Phys" by Reichl. Albeit noticeable typos,
as long as the reader does all the hard work and derives eqns step by step, he/she can easily correct the typos without missing any important information.
The reason I liked this book over others is because of its clear
and crisp content to underpin the essential "physics" of each equation by simple words. Moreover, the connections between
each section and chapter are arranged in a logical way as you can see that Bob has indeed distilled a thorough understanding
of nonequilibrium stat/mech into a delicious, thin book for which every student who uses stat/mech for research should read.

A great start but far too many typos/too little defn's

Zwanzig shows great mastery of the material and his explanations are great. They help explain the material well.
But the big problem here is that there are just so many typos. When you want to follow complicated arguments, it can take forever to figure out what he means precisely/mathematically.
Also, there is not the slightest attempt to keep units correct or fix a representation, so one finds inner products between objects that don't really make sense. They are never formally defined.
It's a great book to get the ideas from and some simple derivations. I'm still working my way through parts of it. But unless you have a complementary book to guide you, especially through Ch. 8, or you are already familiar with the material, you may get lost...I would suggest Berne/Pacora Ch. 11 for help in Ch. 8

Another great reference by perez!

Another excellent book by Perez! Combined with his first book i learned plenty of tips to create full fledged rpg's faster. What used to take months now l can get a core game done in a week.

For reference i also use rpg maker for teens (which covers vx) and my mechanics/numbers use the d20 system (because why reinvent the wheel?)

Greatness Is Upon Me... I Found My "WHY"!

I should start by saying that I have owned a physical copy of this book since it first released. It's nice to see that there is now an e-book edition. Greatness Is Upon You is one of those rare gems that you can reread countless times and apply it to your everyday endeavors. For those of you that are not familiar with Eric Thomas's story, he grew up in a rough neighborhood under terrible circumstances and is now a renowned motivational speaker (mostly known for his "WHEN YOU WANT TO SUCCEED AS BAD AS YOU WANT TO BREATHE, THEN YOU'LL BE SUCCESSFUL." video). This book is essentially a guideline of principles he used to achieve his greatness. He assures you at the end of every chapter with a meaningful story that if you follow his road-map to success, you too will be successful over time. The question that most of you are probably asking is whether or not these principles for success will actually work for you. I certainly cannot speak for everybody, but let me share with you my journey.

I am a college student at a community college. I work part-time on weekends. Prior to reading Greatness Is Upon You, my GPA was a 2.6. I was only taking two classes at a time and was struggling with my grades. I dreaded going to work because it wasn't something I truly wanted to do. I purchased Greatness Is Upon You prior to my summer semester at school. I was so motivated by Eric Thomas's principles for success that after finishing the book, I signed up for a maximum of 18-credits and took on extra hours at work.

Since then, I have scored between 90% and 100% on ALL exams in EVERY class. In most of my classes, I have the highest average. Additionally, my public speaking professor tells me that he sees a level of confidence in my speaking abilities that he has never seen in a student before. My GPA is now a 3.8 and I have enrolled in my college's honor society. At work, I have been promoted and received a generous pay increase. I have learned to balance work time and relaxation time, how to closely manage my finances, and how to be a more joyous and outgoing person.

In this book, Eric Thomas stresses that greatness is within all of us. There is no magical formula for success. What needs to change, however, is your THOUGHT PROCESS. The reason why I was not successful is because I was not thinking clearly. Simply put, I haven't discovered my "WHY?". Greatness Is Upon You has helped me discover my WHY, and now, I can see clearly that greatness is upon me. It doesn't matter if you are a college student, a single parent, or a homeless person. Greatness is upon you. Do yourself a favor... purchase this book. I personally wrote Eric Thomas a letter to thank him for all that this book has done for me. Hopefully it will do the same for you.

a must read for everybody.

In times where everybody goes to google for their information, it was nice to read a book with a lot of meat in it. It really helped me understand about the choices I made in the past. I really enjoyed Eric being honest about his life in this book. I will start to apply the things I have learned from this book.

It's decent

I love listening to his speeches, so I figured I'd give his book a try. It's okay, nothing ground-breaking. To be honest you'd probably be better off just watching some of his stuff on YouTube than buying the book. It's good, but not great. Same stuff you'll read in other books.

Take accountability, don't blame others
Keep a positive attitude.
Work hard.

That pretty much sums up the whole book.

Helen Rosethorn - and her team of contributors - is to be congratulated on a fresh look at the subject and an excellent book that could well become an essential read for practitioner, academic and student alike. For me, the significant contribution - different from other offerings on the subject - is the attempt to simplify it all. Helpfully, it distinguishes the brand as a journey rather than a project or initiative. If you accept this theory, the case studies are even more helpful and insightful. And the assertion that the way that employees interact with customers and shareholders is the real distinguishing factor may, to many, be obvious. But it is not the way that many brands have been established or developed. This is a good book. It should be read...and reread in order to pick up the hints missed first time round. The New Standard - Absolutely Stunning Photos

I have owned many photography books over the years and Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Photography Field Guide" will be the book I pack with me from here on out.

The book is organized into the 11 chapters detailed below and each chapter is organized into smaller sections which help you seek out the specific topics you want to review.

1) A Few Digital Basics - Chapter topics range from file format and shooting in RAW to a gem of a section on white balance that explained better in 2 pages how this setting can really improve my photos than anything else I have come across in the past.

2) Exposure - Topics in this chapter include exposure explanations, the photographic triangle, creative exposures, and more. Bryan is a master at de-mystifying exposure and you will improve your photography with this chapter.

3) Aperture - This chapter does much more than just explain the effects of proper aperture settings, Bryan teaches you how aperture helps you tell the story you intend to with the photo.

4) Shutter Speed & ISO - This chapter offered one of the best explanations of how ISO effects your photos I have found since being introduced to digital photography and I find the section on "motion in low light" to be very good. Bryan also explained the relationship between apeture and shutter speeds in an easy to understand and apply in the field format.

5) Learning To See - This chapter covers a lot of ground on lenses and selecting the right lens for the right shot. Advice sections such as "shooting up" and "looking down" are helpful if you are looking for new ways to shoot but the photos included throughout the book are the best way to get new ideas for framing your shots.

6) Designing A Striking Image - This chapter is the largest in the book and covers more than I can go into. Suffice it to say that this chapter is all about composition, choosing your subject, getting creative, etc. These kinds of chapters have always been inspiring to me because the photos are amazing and Bryan does not let you down here. If you aren't motivated to get up and grab your camera after reading these sections you should probably put it down for good.

7) The Importance Of Light - This chapter covers a lot of ground from the best light, to low light, to backlight, etc. I found the material on exposure settings for various light conditions helpful and I was surprised that HDR exposure was covered in the detail it was...though not enough to start shooting HDR in my opinion. It seems as though you would still want to buy an HDR book to get into that in earnest.

8) Close-Up Photography - This chapter is a pretty good introduction to macro and it did answer many questions I have had. I have been flirting with getting more into macro and this chapter has helped me get just a little bit closer to making the investment.

9) Photographing People - This chapter is really about being a more professional, courteous photographer when people are the subject. This is the smallest chapter at just 7 pages and Bryan uses most of them to play armchair psychologist at getting people to like you taking their picture so you can get the best photos possible.

10) Unconventional Techniques - This chapter covers various "tricks of the trade" such as "making rain" or unusual ways to mount your camera and it will only really be useful on a lazy weekend day when you can't find anything else to do or photgraph. Fun info here but basically a bonus chapter.

11) Useful Tools - Here is the chapter that every photo book has and it basically feeds the gear addiction...tripods, filters, and more...

It is impossible to get into all of the details that you will find in this book, and at 400 pages you will not be short of info to learn from and grow as a photographer.

A couple other comments about the book itself...it is very high quality with good, heavy, high gloss paper that make the photos really pop of the pages. The book is very well built too and I can see that it will last for many years to come being lugged around in my camera bag and on trips. Also, this has to be the most compact and small 400 page book I have ever seen which is great because I do want to carry it with me when I go.

And the photos...they are simply spectacular. I have found myself just flipping through the pages to look at the photos and that can be just as instructive as the text in my opinion. Bryan has selected excellent examples to demonstrate his topics/lessons and all of the photo captions have detail about the photo's exposure settings which I like because it helps reinforce the lessons being taught.

I do not think anyone will be disappointed with this book and unless you are a seasoned pro already you will learn and grow as a photographer when you read and re-read this book's thorough chapters.

Great if you haven't read Peterson's Other Books

As the title indicates, this is a great book covering a range of topics on photography. If you haven't read any of Peterson's books, this is 5 stars. However, if you have read his other books - particularly Understanding Exposure, Understanding Shutter Speed, chapters of this book are almost identical, though not as deep, as those books, and you'll probably be a little disappointed if you were looking for new material. Same pictures, examples, and information - which is why I am only giving this 4 stars. It really should be a "compilation of/best of" Peterson's photo books.

It is intended as a "field guide" and if you want something to carry around, this does cover most of the important topics and techniques - though it isn't exactly pocket-sized.

Excellent guide for beginners, highly portable, covers guidance from his current books

I'm just getting into DSLR photography and have taken several classes at a local community college. Bryan Peterson's books have been great learning tools for supplementing what I've learned in class. I've read his "Understanding Exposure" book cover to cover multiple times and had just started "Understanding Shutter Speed" when i saw this guide while on vacation. The guide covers a lot of the same (if not identical) content as his other books, but its portable size alone makes it worth buying, even if you have his other books. I really like his writing style, and he includes some really inspiring photographs that aren't too difficult for beginners to duplicate. While on vacation I've used his guide to (among other things) take photographs at dusk as well as experiment with shutter speeds. He lists some of his "must-have" accessories (e.g., neutral density filters) that I should have bought before vacation and fortunately was able to buy thanks to Amazon's affordable overnight Prime shipping.

And yes, it's been worth it to haul my tripod across the country! Get this guide--it's worth every penny.

Piso Christ

Readers, I was brought up in the Christian religion. I attended church every time the doors were open. I traveled miles to attend revivals and I 'spread the gospel' every opportunity I could. I tried to follow church doctrines to the letter. I was going to do whatever it took not to burn forever and ever in hell. I feared God. Yet, I knew I was never good enough. I missed the mark to often to get to heaven. I went to Bible college to find my answers, that would certainly get me closer to heaven if I should die. I was scared to death, I would die.
I started questioning our church doctrines and the seemingly contradictions in the bible and this really got me in trouble. Live by faith not doubting, which translated "do not ask any question of the church authority".
My biggest question was; how did we get the book we call Holy and who were the men that wrote such a book with an old testament full of violence that doesn't show love? Not a love I was told that God was and that he never changes. The same yesterday, today, and forever!!
When I started studying history outside the bible, I had my eyes opened; yet, still didn't know the author of the Holy Book.
Reading "Piso's Christ" makes so much sense to one who is educated enough not to believe in Santa Clause. I would love to see this book required reading in our schools and then have our pulpit people study this book and learn how deceived they have been by their educators who were deceived also for the last 2000 years.
If after reading the "Piso's Christ", we would still want to believe our Santa Clause, Holy Book; we could. But now it would be an educated choice, not an ignorant follow the mob decision.
I love the freedom, the peace of mind, the love of life without the fear of death, I am now experiencing, since I have a religious education and not just a church dogma doctrine.
Go for it, read it, and then choose if it is for you or not.

A mystery that's not yet solved

Roman Piso is a longtime advocate of Abelard Reuchlin's view that the Gospels were written by a Roman aristocrat named "Arrius Calpurnius Piso", whose very existence is unknown to conventional history. Where did this information come from? A review of Reuchlin's pamphlet posted here at Amazon.com provides a clue.

"I heard rabbi Reuchlin on WFLA in Tampa back in 1998 touting his new revelation about the Piso conspiracy. I called into the show. I ask Mr. Reuchlin if he is the one who discovered this conspiracy? He replied others had told him about it but he is the one who figured it all out and who the players were in the Piso family who wrote the Septuagint and the New Testament books. I ask him if anyone else before had writen any of this and did he document who and what books or writings we could find them. He replied that only among the Jews was this known and they held it a tight secret."

This entire book seems to be an attempt to provide a scholarly justification for a view that originally came from some secret oral tradition. However, if there's a coherent proof here regarding this central point, I can't find it.

Where Were the Copyeditors and Proofreaders?

I bought this book in an effort to understand the rationale behind the so-called Christ Myth Theory, along with a few other volumes including those on the subject by Robert M. Price and Joseph Atwill. I realized even before I purchased it that the title "Piso Christ" was probably an attempt at a play on the title of Andres Serrano's ultra-provocative and -controversial 1989 photograph "Immerson: Piss Christ," so I knew in advance that this work was likely to be intentionally iconoclastic and outrageous. I have no problem with either iconoclasm or outrageousness in a book of philosphy, theology, or biblical criticism, as such, so long as the work in question contains a reasoned argument backed up with solid documentation. Ironically, this book may actually HAVE a reasoned argument in it, somewhere or other, but if it does I'll have to go to Price or Atwill for my proof rather than here. It's been a long time since I have read, or even tried to skim, such execrably bad prose. The style is inflated, bombastic, too clever by half, and in my opinion crafted for absolutely nothing else than stirring up the fretful complacency of the evangelical Christians of which its authors are likely mirror images. In fact, the writing reminds me of nothing so much as a "circular letter" in a set of Baptist associational minutes composed by a preacher with just enough education to think that throwing out long words and sentences thirteen to the dozen is proof positive of a forceful argument. I wish that the authors--one of whom obviously uses a pseudonym--deserved better than this, but any reader who doesn't believe me is invited to examine a section of text himself or herself, with Amazon's "Look Inside!" option. There's no way that any self-respecting editor, copyeditor, or professional proofreader would have let this book see print without a thorough reworking. All the possible difference the authors' arguments might have made to religious scholarship have been drowned in a sea of bad prose.
