Why did it smell so bad?
By Diego
I rented this book and not only did I rarely use it, it reeked of moth balls. I can't give it 1 start because it's not the authors fault. As far as the content goes, the information about U.S. history is there, however you won't learn much about any one particular thing since there is so much that needs to be cramped into 1 textbook. If you're like me however, you get the book because you have to.

What a colossal failure
By Dangerst
The American Journey, Combined Volume (7th Edition) came without the myhistorylab access card as adverstised. I'm furious to have paid this much to get a book without it's security wrapping. I got half of the product I ordered. The box came to me with the tape fallen apart and I can't even begin to elaborate my frustration as I start class on May 11. Really terrible experience for a vet returning to school for the first time in years.

Pretty Good
By DOOMWAR
The American Journey Volume 2 is what we've been using for our U.S. History course this semester. It's a pretty good book filled with information focusing on many important events of the history of America. I would recommend reading the book right after a lecture on the current topic just to re-enforce the information and learn some more things regarding that event. I have thus far enjoyed using this book for the class as it's not written as a stale history book but something with style. The media, aka images in the book really bring the history to life as well. :)

Survivalist
By Gene
This follow-up makes the old saying "if it wasn't for bad luck she would have no luck". This poor girl thinks she's home free, finding her biological father, brother and mother only to think she's lost them again. How many times can this girl be drug thru hell!

Good story but tied up too pretty to be realistic
By AKC Book lover
I read all three book in a day and I liked the premise and she was very authentic for Jane. I did think that the ending seemed a little too tidy and wrapped up. I mean Dominick tortured her for a time and he explains that he hated her for a while. I undertand forgiving them, but now it's like their this big happy family, and I didn't get the Justin and Josh loving her. Dominick I get it was clear. But on the whole, the insane reality of sex trafficking was portrayed very accurately. These readers want to believe that someone couldn't endure this but it is happening everyday in every city. Wake up.

WOW!
By VinellaGal2000
I stumbled upon this third book, not realizing it was available. I fell right back into Jane's spiral into her living hell. The energy and excitement of this final book was so good, I finished this book in no time.
I kind of wish it wouldn't end!

Un punto de vista diferente.
By peke chan

By Karelys

Review
'It is difficult to fault this excellent collection, which is very well edited and rich in detail and theoretical analysis.' Gerard Delanty, Global Review of Ethnopolitics

' ... this edited volume will be of much interest to those interested in contextualising and in thinking across the notions of universalism and cultural relativity. The contributors very eloquently make their case in their ethnographically varied articles, leaving the reader with plenty to think about and even, at times, reconsider their stances. This is definitely an edited volume worth reading.' Maria Gropas, Cambridge Anthropology Journal

'... this is a serious book that addresses important political issues and challenges the adequacy of the anthropological and legal concepts that impinge on them ... what this excellent book shows is that the standardized legal form that the international definition of rights has taken cannot easily accommodate the complex realities of the world as it is.' The Journal of The Royal Anthropological Institute

'the book shows clearly and accurately the pitfalls of the adoption of an essentialist view on 'culture'. Moreover, it points out eloquently that there is no unique theoretical model that can be sufficiently applied to nay claims over rights and culture across the global ... will assist and advance the discussion on the implementation of rights.' Nations and Nationalism

The first of its kind
By A Customer
For 30 years I have been reading the FT. Somewhere in these 30 years "high quality" financial journalism apparently died and was supplanted by PR.
Still I spend much more time with it than before. The reason are a few dozen online commenters who know their stuff.
I still gloss over the Martin Wolf columns, but only because commenter Mark GB, maybe the smartest financial writer on the planet, usually lists his 10 reasons why Martin is wrong.
Commenters come all come from different angles, backgrounds and hold different prejudices, but the message is clear: The system is in its last period.
How it got there, how long this period might take and what, in the end might supplant it, is open to discussion.
To my great astonishment, Cathal Haughian was apparently able to get the rights to publish many of these comments.
I would like to thank him for this work, which judging by the kindle price, was not intended to make him richer.
I ordered five extra paperbacks to distribute to friends and family.
One suggestion: The book's themes are aligned along questions. It should be read along this way, what one is interested in. I found most interesting discussions in the middle and the end. So better start with whatever interests you here and now….

By Amazon Customer
I think it is an extremely important book.
The data, the warning signs are all around us like different pieces of diagnostic information but they are still scattered and thus ignored.
Without collecting such data and setting up a proper diagnosis we can't even hope to start healing the disease that affects our present human society.
This book attempts and succeeds in collecting all the necessary information showing the mirror in front of us, not allowing people to keep ignoring how much we are on a mistaken, dreamlike path that can only end in disaster.
Moreover at the end the book also offers a potential way out, trying to put down new foundations a better, more sustainable global human society could be built upon.
Our present civilization will inevitably fall apart as it was built on an illusion, without natural foundations. It is very important that by the time panic would set in people see there is another way, there are true solutions, they are offered a way out.
And this book and similar attempts in "educating"people in a completely new way are and will be like most sought after remedy for a terminally ill patient.

It's a masterpiece. It'll be read by historians.
By Andrew Mullaney
It is a masterpiece. The title is gloomy but the summary does offer a new framework of capitalism that looks workable.
It'll be read by the intellectual elite. The masses are so demoralised that they'd rather watch reality TV.
Just look at what's on the front page of Huffington post.

I was sent an digital copy of this book and was discussing it all last night.
This is a very complex topic but the book has 40 short chapters that are structured as questions that capitalists answer.
The contributors are from across the globe so that helps to draw a clear picture of the global economy.

I'm a tech CEO. So I zeroed in to the chapters about technological unemployment and robots.
I strongly disagreed with the notion that labour saving technology should be banned.
The summary investigates and explores....very interesting. Particularly the parts about knowledge and culture.

It also demolishes Keynesian dogma and the economics profession though that doesn't seem to be a goal,
it seems to happen by accident.

God, Sexuality, and the Self: An Essay 'On the Trinity', by Sarah Coakley

God, Sexuality and the Self is a new venture in systematic theology. Sarah Coakley invites the reader to re-conceive the relation of sexual desire and the desire for God and - through the lens of prayer practice - to chart the intrinsic connection of this relation to a theology of the Trinity. The goal is to integrate the demanding ascetical undertaking of prayer with the recovery of lost and neglected materials from the tradition and thus to reanimate doctrinal reflection both imaginatively and spiritually. What emerges is a vision of human longing for the triune God which is both edgy and compelling: Coakley's théologie totale questions standard shibboleths on 'sexuality' and 'gender' and thereby suggests a way beyond current destructive impasses in the churches. The book is clearly and accessibly written and will be of great interest to all scholars and students of theology.

Review
"In the beginning was the Word ... Where the Christian account of divine trinity is traced back to the Johannine correlation of God and the Logos, the third Person may be no more than a necessary postscript. In this remarkable first volume of her Systematic Theology, Sarah Coakley proposes an alternative, Pauline trinitarianism in which the Holy Spirit is fundamental rather than marginal - the Spirit who 'helps us in our weakness' by redirecting human desire towards God. From this starting point, the argument opens out to incorporate patristic traditions of ascetic spirituality and contemplation, the trinity as represented in the visual arts, and fieldwork in a modern charismatic church. The book is an extraordinary achievement, lucid and nuanced yet passionate and provocative in its plea for a reintegrated theology."
Francis Watson, Chair of Biblical Interpretation, Durham University

"Sarah Coakley does some very interesting things in [God, Sexuality, and the Self] ... She 'risks' writing for a general Christian audience, and her readable, even entertaining book shows that it was worth the risk."
Peter J. Leithart, First Things

"... reading God, Sexuality, and the Self is like watching the world premiere of a brilliant new opera - one whose story draws on fascinating bits of regional history so viewers come away understanding their own home better, even though the art itself is new."
Christian Century

"This book, God, Sexuality, and the Self, has been a joy to read ... Capturing the energy of God, sexuality, and the self in such a clever, comprehensive and challenging way, is truly impressive. The language is challenging, the academic standard [is] very high."
Faith and Freedom

"Admirably, Coakley aims to approach a wider audience whilst remaining academically rigorous."
Aaron P. Edwards, Theological Book Review

"The utterly compelling heart of the book, in which Coakley interprets a selected history of Trinitarian iconography, stands as a masterclass in the use of visual resources for systematic theologians."
Linn Marie Tonstad, Theology and Sexuality

"Coakley's work is engaging and fascinating as a means of critiquing a number of strains of contemporary theology."
Jack Kilcrease, Anglican and Episcopal History

A Transformative Text
By Ryan Duns, SJ
In perhaps his most famous maxim, the 4th century mystic Evagrius Ponticus wrote, "If you are a theologian, you pray truly; if you pray truly, you are a theologian." Sarah Coakley's text is, without question, the product of a theologian's prayer. It is, furthermore, a theologian's invitation to pray and to develop the art of Christian contemplation.

A critical book review would praise the book's erudition and accessibility. No doubt, this is the work of a theological master. Each page crackles with brilliant retrievals of the tradition and results in a creative, refreshing, and empowering synthesis.

Its brilliance as a scholarly text aside, let me say simply: this book enkindled within me the desire to pray. Coakley describes the act of contemplative prayer as inculcating "patterns of un-mastery" whereby one allows God, through the Spirit, to refashion one's life in the pattern of the Son. I finished the book yesterday afternoon and attended the Palm Sunday liturgy at a local parish. I found myself newly caught up in the Passion narrative anew. I cannot escape the sense that this probing text contributed enormously to carving out new space within my heart and mind, making possible a new experience of liturgical and personal prayer.

This is not a dispassionate book "about" theology. It is, itself, an exercise in theology because it is book arising from, and leading toward, prayer. Written in a flowing and accessible manner, this is an indispensable book for readers who desire to know what it would be "to enter, willingly and consciously, to the life of divine desire." For Coakley, theology is always "a recommendation for life." Read this text as an itinerary, as a program of theological exercise of mind and spirit, and be open to the transformative power of ascetic prayer led by the Spirit.

Strikingly original, yet fiercely orthodox
By sculpting/time
The first volume in Coakley's systematics is rich with insight, and I'll try and inevitably fail to give some sense of what she achieves here in this review.

Coakley's overall goal is to articulate a view of the Trinity that is based in contemplative prayer, prayer that is infused with the simultaneously alluring and purgative presence of the Spirit. This is a 'Spirit-led' view of the Trinity, modeled on Romans 8 (the major precedent here is Origen). In order to get at this view of the Trinity, Coakley employs what she calls "theologie totale" (a nod to the Annales school of historiography). With this method, Coakley draws in a number of heterogenous elements into her systematic development, including iconography and gender theory, but--most strikingly--sociology, in the form of a field study of two north England churches where she discovers varieties of pneumatology in action. This great variety of material is enthralling, as one begins to see how different views of the Trinity seep into every aspect of life. One feels a great sense of excitement when she discusses orthodoxy as a spiritual project (again, a la Origen), rather than simple propositional assent.

Absolutely the most striking aspect of Coakley's text, however, is that its resolute commitment to feminism ends up producing a a more orthodox view of the Trinity than any traditionalist repetition. She exposes how many of these traditionalist viewpoints implicitly exclude the Spirit from equality with the other members of the Trinity, even if they explicitly claim otherwise. A recovery of the Romans 8 incorporative understanding of the Trinity, where the Spirit leads ones participation in the triune reality, is necessary. And the brilliant conclusion is that this Spirit-led vision of the Trinity destroys the patriarchal idols that a false dyad of Father-Son can sustain. The Trinity, then--that 'old boys club' according to Baroness von Blixen--is shown by Coakley to have such a transformative force that it can indeed sustain the highest feminist aims. The divine desire reaches out to us and frees us of any false and idolatrous prisons in which we've been placed. And, through the rule established in consistently practiced contemplative silence, it also frees us from ourself.

I've really only scratched the surface here. For more, you'll have to crack the pages of this transformative book.

Augustine, Gregory of Nyssa, Christian Platonism, and Eros
By tess
The content of this book is excellent. In the spirit of 'creative fidelity,' Rev. Coakley writes a beautiful orthodox exposition about how the issue of right Trinitarianism cannot be separated from the way we understand and act out gendered relationships. Sexual desire is intrinsically related to our desire for God, and this can be known experientially through contemplative prayer in the Holy Spirit (Romans 8 being the Scriptural hinge on which the essay turns). This is a book about spirituality first, so it refreshingly does not come across as a political polemic. In truth, this work recalls the old saw, "A theologian is one who prays."

The extensive bibliographies at the end of each chapter provide an excellent directory for further study, and the study of Trinitarian iconography in chapter 5 is indispensable to the education of any serious Christian. I look forward to the next book in Coakley's theologie totale series.

My only criticism is that I feel the editing could have been tighter, and that sometimes the importance of the author's point is lost in wordiness. Especially in the first few chapters, the author falls prey to telling us what she is going to tell us, telling us, then telling us what she told us. (This is the only reason I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5.)
