This book is devoted to a rather complete discussion of techniques and topics intervening in the mathematical treatment of quantum and semi-classical mechanics. It starts with a rigorous presentation of the basics of symplectic geometry and of its multiply-oriented extension. Further chapters concentrate on Lagrangian manifolds, Weyl operators and the Wigner-Moyal transform as well as on metaplectic groups and Maslov indices. Thus the keys for the mathematical description of quantum mechanics in phase space are discussed. They are followed by a rigorous geometrical treatment of the uncertainty principle. Then Hilbert-Schmidt and trace-class operators are exposed in order to treat density matrices. In the last chapter the Weyl pseudo-differential calculus is extended to phase space in order to derive a Schrödinger equation in phase space whose solutions are related to those of the usual Schrödinger equation by a wave-packet transform.

The text is essentially self-contained and can be used as basis for graduate courses. Many topics are of genuine interest for pure mathematicians working in geometry and topology.

Thinking great thoughts - together

This book is about how human beings think together and, through the medium of language, jointly construct meaning. The author adopts a descriptive linguistic approach so if you are looking for a prescription for how to write or speak the `Queen's English' then I suggest you look elsewhere.

It begins by looking, albeit briefly, at Vygotsky's seminal work on the relationship between language and thought, and continues by stressing the importance of context in the making of meaning. It then discusses the uses to which language has been put in the pursuit of power, influence and control, continues by exploring the contribution that living in communities has made to the development of collective thought and ends by examining the varied forms of dialogue that occur in different situations.

Though quite a slight book and somewhat 'academic' in tone, it is, nevertheless, and as might be expected, very well written. More importantly, though, it manages, succinctly, to summarize the latest developments in linguistics and language study relating to the connections between language and thought and certainly highly recommended for anyone wanting a `taster' before delving into weightier tomes!

Had to read this for a instructional technology class. Well written with a great flow, not too many citations to read around. Not just a book for understanding computer mediated communications (CMC), but a concise accord of where we are in the present with language and thinking together, thus building on the continual conversation started from the dawn of unrecorded human history towards the epoch of realization and understanding each other.

Specifically this book deals with language interactions and how people share with each other in common every day contexts through language exchange. The coined term "interthinking" evolves from this text: Shared knowledge between people, collective unconsciousness, collaborative conversations, and dialogue are all included. Conversational ground rules for CMC talk are also covered: one person talking, informal talk, legality boundaries, and CMC anonymity expression. Cumulative talk ideals state that we build upon each others conversation in controlled means, exploratory talk is critical constructive and joint endeavor, and finally disputational is merely egocentric discord with others. Mercer states that argumentation is a major way we do things through conversations.

" What's Wrong With Traditional Reward System ? "

As asserted by Belcher "traditional approaches to compensation do not meet today's business needs and are failing American industry. As the recognition of failure grows, U.S. companies are rapidly adopting alternative reward systems in an attempt to deal with the challenges of an increasingly competitive marketplace."
What's wrong with this traditional reward system?
According to Belcher :
* tradional reward systems compensate, but do not reward.
* traditional reward systems do not reinforce teamwork.
* traditional reward systems do not support strategic business priorities.
* traditional reward systems are inflexible and are not reflective of business results.
Then, variable/alternative pay system vs. traditional pay/reward system.
Variable pay system is defined by Belcher as an alternative compensation system that ties pay to business outcomes and supports a participative management process. Cash payouts are based on a predetermined measure or measures of group or organizational performance.

As promised, a beautiful book

I'm afraid I must respectfully disagree with other customers in the review section. For the price, this is a FIVE-STAR book. It is illustrated beautifully with full color photographs. I have the hard-copy and not the Kindle version (though I do own a Kindle). My guess is that the pages would present stunningly on the Kindle for iPad or Kindle for Mac. I also have a Kindle E-ink reader. I doubt it would show well on that last device. I noticed one of the reviewers criticized the photo quality. I must disagree. I find it to be top notch. It is presented in a matte format rather than glossy print.. so my guess is the reviewer would have preferred the glossy versions. I, on the other hand, love the matte finishes on all the photographs which are nicely crisp and detailed.

EXCELLENT book for the price. A perfect gift for a history buff. I love it and I bought it here on Amazon.

Leisurely Cruise through History of Mankind

This is an excellent read. As usual, BBC does not disappoint. The book is compiled from transcripts of a 100-episode series on BBC Radio. One hundred objects are thoughtfully picked from exhibits at the British Museum to chronicle the history of mankind, from its earliest beginnings up to the 21st century. The 100 chapters are short, but solid, each corresponding to an episode on radio. The book is great for leisurely, but very informative reading. A definite advantage that the book has over the radio episodes is that it shows each of the 100 objects in full colour.

The book is highly recommended for any reader who is interested in understanding the development of mankind. It provides clear and useful background for reflecting on how we have come to where we are -- when and how we have progressed, as well as when and how often we have regressed.

I read a Kindle version, which allows me to magnify photographs to look closely at the 100 objects. My only complaint is that, with Kindle, it has been rather more cumbersome for me to refer back to the page with the photographs in each chapter while I was cruising through.

Clear Some Space In Your Mind

I believe I learned more per page reading this book than any I've ever read. A tour through all of history using objects collected (stolen?) by the British Museum, this book is a bravura execution of material culture and archaeological studies. In fact, I used several entries with my Advanced Placement Literature class in order to expose them to effective and interesting "close reading." MacGregor does with objects what literary critics do with a passage of poetry: he describes the object (lovely pictures ARE included), he gives a fascinating context of the period in which this object was used, and finally, provides an analysis of what the object "says" about the people, nation, and region that used or owned it. I find this method of historical explication incredibly engaging. Rather than begin with abstract concepts like democracy, Federalism, or ethnic cleansing, MacGregor begins with the concrete--a vase, a coin, a flower pot-- and says here's what this culture produced, here's what that says about them. This also dovetails nicely with what I teach in class regarding advertising; that we can come to understand the ideals of a nation by studying its advertisements. Interestingly, the objects MacGregor chooses also function as "advertisements" for their respective milieus. A testament to how well this book is written and constructed is that I read it incredibly quickly. Before I knew it, I was on object 56 at the 300 something page mark and I had no mental fatigue. The fact that the book is organized in 100 3 to 4 pages "chapters" helps a lot because I found myself reading a few objects here and there whenever I had some spare time. I recommend this book highly to anyone who has even a fleeting interest in archaeology or cultural materialism; your efforts, and the rather hefty price of the book will be worth it.

Daniel H. Rellstab teaches linguistics, intercultural communication and semiotics at the University of Vaasa, Finland. He authored a study on Charles S. Peirce and wrote on language and identity in multilingual contexts. Recently, he co-edited Dialog und (Inter-)Kulturalität. Theorien, Konzepte, empirische Befunde (with Simon Meier and Gesine L. Schiewer, 2014).

Christiane Schlote teaches drama and postcolonial literatures at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. It's only $35 at Collected Works Bookstore and Coffee house in Santa Fe. The people trying to sell this for more are crooks. The book store is setting money aside for cancer research. Don't give your money to crooks... that are only seeking 'your' treasures.

This book is only available at a book store in Santa Fe, NM. Proceeds go to help fight cancer. The book store is Collected Works. And the hunt for the treasure is ON! So far, as of this writing, no word on if it was found yet. If found, who could keep quiet about it?? lol.. Forrest is leaving many legacies behind, including this one. Get all the info on him you can. And good luck in finding the treasure. :-) And he's also on facebook, the book & all is on facebook.

There was a reason why we got this book, as I am sure most others are doing the same. When I first began to read it, I was a little annoyed thinking "this was obviously self published" due to the lack of editing and choice of words. Once you get past the simplicity of his choice of words, there is actually a romance to the story. Not in the sense of a romance novel, but a romance in the way he loved and lived his life. Reading the old stories of "back in the day", an era seemed to be long forgotten, was simply wonderful, soothing and left me longing for those days to return again.

Doug Sleeter (@dougsleeter) is a passionate leader of innovation and change in the small business accounting technology world. As a CPA firm veteran and former Apple Computer Evangelist, he has melded his two great passions (accounting and technology) to guide developers in the innovation of new products and to educate and lead accounting professionals who serve small businesses. Doug has been named one of the "Top 25 Thought Leaders" by CPA Practice Advisor for several years, as well as one of Accounting Today's "Top 100 Most Influential People in Accounting" from 2008 through 2015. He was recently awarded the Small Business Influencer Champion award. Stacey Byrne (@SLByrneCPA) is a practicing CPA with 25 years' experience consulting with a variety of small to medium-sized businesses including restaurants, construction companies, law firms, and not-for-profit organizations. She has worked as a staff accountant at the Iacopi, Lenz & Co. CPA firm, and is the former director of finance for a management company where she oversaw accounting and payroll for multiple facilities, including a sports/entertainment arena, theatre, ice rink, and ballpark. Stacey is a former adjunct professor of QuickBooks at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, California. Stacey holds several Intuit certifications in QuickBooks (Advanced Desktop, Advanced Online, and Enterprise). She is a certified Sleeter Group QuickBooks consultant and a certified Xero Partner. Stacey holds a B.S.B.A. degree in Accounting from California State University, Stanislaus, and is currently in pursuit of her M.S. Ed. degree in Online Teaching and Learning at California State University, East Bay. She is also a member of several professional organizations, including the California CPA Society, Sleeter Group Consultants Network, and the Woodard Network. When she is not writing, working with clients, or studying, you will likely find Stacey at a San Francisco Giants game or enjoying family time with her two sons.

But love is no illusion! Will believes that all he could manage would be a kind of lust-slave spell, and even a con-artist has to draw the line somewhere. Yet, despite the sign, citizens keep on asking. Why can’t his customers accept his one rule? Why do they keep asking for love? And, what happens when one particular customer won’t take “no” for an answer?

Cyborg Spell Shop: A Harkon Colony Short Story

I love my fantasy and magic but not too bothered about sci fi so why did I buy this - I was looking for something short and punchy for a train journey. The title made absolutely no sense but I was in a rush. Well I am so glad I got this book, (I shall have to rush my purchases more often!) It is a great short story, the characters are great and the story is wacky enough to be engaging. I must admit I was ready to slam this book and leave a crap review but I found myself getting drawn in by the story and the characters to the point where I wanted it to last a lot longer.

In short this is a great book that is well written. I am looking forward to getting more by this author :-)

Hilarious and entertaining short story! Short ribs, please.

This is an exceedingly amusing little short story about a technosage who uses technology to convince people he knows magic. Of course, the tables get turned on him when someone demands the only spell he can't give: Love. Our hero then finds himself on the other side of his own style of "magic," and has to use his wits to scramble out. It all works out in the end in an amusing and thoroughly satisfying manner. It feels in some ways like a zany and hilarious '80s movie. I'm a big fan of author James Chalk!
