A detailed guide to profiting from trend reversals using the technical analysis of price action
The key to being a successful trader is finding a system that works and sticking with it. Author Al Brooks has done just that. By simplifying his trading system and trading only 5-minute price charts he's found a way to capture profits regardless of market direction or economic climate. His first book, Reading Price Charts Bar by Bar, offered an informative examination of his system, but it didn't allow him to get into the real nuts and bolts of the approach. Now, with this new series of books, Brooks takes you step by step through the entire process.
By breaking down his trading system into its simplest pieces: institutional piggybacking or trend trading, trading ranges, and transitions or reversals (the focus of this book), this three book series offers access to Brooks' successful methodology. Trading Price Action Reversals reveals the various types of reversals found in today's markets and then takes the time to discuss the specific characteristics of these reversals, so that you can use them in your everyday trading endeavors. While price action analysis works on all time frames, there are different techniques that you can use in trading intraday, daily, weekly and monthly charts. This, among many other issues, is also addressed throughout these pages.
- Offers insights on how to handle volatility and sharp reversals
- Covers the concept of using options when trading certain charts
- Examines how to deal with the emotions that come along with trading
- Other books in the series include Trading Price Action Trends and Trading Price Action Trading Ranges
If you're looking to make the most of your time in today's markets the trading insights found in Trading Price Action Reversals will help you achieve this goal.

From the Inside Flap
The key to being a successful trader is finding a system that works and sticking with it. Author Al Brooks, a technical analysis contributor to Futures magazine and an independent trader for twenty-five years, has done just that. Over the course of his career, he's found a way to capture consistent profits regardless of market direction or economic climate. And now, with his new three-book series—which focuses on how to use price action to trade the markets—Brooks takes you step by step through the entire process.
In order to put his methodology in perspective, Brooks examined an essential array of price action basics and trends in the first book of this series, Trading Price Action Trends; provided important insights on trading ranges, breakouts, order management, and the mathematics of trading in the next book, Trading Price Action Trading Ranges; and now moves on to discuss trend reversals, day trading, daily charts, options, and the best setups for all time frames in this third, and final, book of the series, Trading Price Action Reversals.
Divided into four comprehensive parts, Trading Price Action Reversals skillfully addresses how to spot and profit from trend reversals—which offer an excellent risk-reward ratio—using the technical analysis of price action. Along the way, it touches on some of the most essential aspects of this approach as well as several other important topics, including:
-
The various types of reversals, their specific characteristics, and how to select the proper ones
-
Capturing profits by successfully trading the "first hour," or more accurately, the opening range of a day session
-
Using price action to effectively incorporate options into your trading strategies
-
Guidelines that can help keep traders on track and put them in a better position to make more informed trades and trade management decisions
-
Specific price action setups that new traders should focus on
-
And much more
Throughout the book, Brooks focuses primarily on 5 minute candle charts—all of which are created with TradeStation—to illustrate basic principles, but also discusses daily and weekly charts. And since he trades more than just E-mini S&P 500 futures, Brooks also details how price action can be used as the basis for trading stocks, forex, Treasury Note futures, and options. For your convenience, a companion website, which can be found at wiley.com/go/tradingreversals, contains all of the charts provided in the book.
Trading is a rewarding endeavor, but it's hard work and requires relentless discipline. To succeed, you have to stick to your rules and avoid emotion—and you have to patiently wait to take only the best trades. Trading Price Action Reversals, the final piece of this three-book set, will help you achieve this goal. With this guide, and the other two books in the series, you'll discover how to develop the patience and discipline to follow a sound system, and reap potentially huge financial rewards in the process.

"A great trader once told me that success was a function of focused energy. This mantra is proven by Al Brooks, who left a thriving ophthalmology practice to become a day trader. Al's intense focus on daily price action has made him a successful trader. A born educator, Al also is generous with his time, providing detailed explanations on how he views daily price action and how other traders can implement his ideas with similar focus and dedication. Al's book is no quick read, but an in-depth road map on how he trades today's volatile markets, complete with detailed strategies, real-life examples, and hard-knocks advice."—Ginger Szala, Publisher and Editorial Director, Futures magazine

This book is the best of his three books
By Claude
English is not my native language, therefore it took me more than a half year to read through Al's three books. I read these books word by word from the first page to the last. Sometimes, I spent the entire morning reading only 6 pages when I reached the crucial part such as "the first hour trading" in book 3. I have read more than 80 books in the past 10 years and finally found these three books that providing the knowledge I had been searching for.
There under are the comments I would like to share with anyone who is learning to trade and looking for books.
1) From these books, I can tell that the author is a well experienced trader with enormous trading knowledge that makes the trading work. While reading his books, I immediately used the strategy and ideas for my trading, they did work well, gradually improving my trading record.
2) These books clarified my thoughts. From all the books I read before, I obtained tons of ideas and strategies that confused me all the time. These books explained clearly what will work and what will not. It save me lots of time to figure out myself. After finishing reading, I do know what rules to follow to be successful.
3) The books cover all aspects of day trading, repeatedly explain the crucial strategies and ideas, provide insights behind the trading and market movement. It helps traders to think profitably.
4) The methodology in these books is unique. I have never read any other books like Al's that explained so detail. Al constantly pointed out a little bar that might mean a significant signal for the next market move. Therefore, I read his books with patience and care.
I cannot write all my feeling about these books here so I will just say that reading the three books significantly turned around my trading record. I appreciate Al's time and energy writing for us. Not all the authors are successful traders, some of them are just writers who cannot battle themselves in the market. Not all successful traders are willing to write down their decades long experience in books to share with others. From my understanding, Al is both a great trader and willing to share his success with others.
Finally I would like to point out that Al's books are good for day trading. To understand his work, you should have a few year trading experience before reading his books, otherwise it is frustrating to follow. Other reviewers pointed out here, the books have too much writing and are hard to follow. I would say that the writing makes perfect sense if you really calm down and work on it like you did with your text books at high schools. The repeated explanation made me think that the author should be a good teacher if he was in the classroom.

Clear, well presented, amazing insight. Put in the WORK, it WILL improve your results.
By Ashwin Ramphal
Firstly, this book is NOT a 2nd edition of Dr. Brooks' first book, as was stated in a previous review. This book is the last installment in a 3 volume release from the author, and this book's Part 1, delivers a deep and detailed treatment of trading reversal setups. The prior two books (of this three volume release) addresses trading Trends and Trading Ranges respectively. Dr. Brooks' undisputed standing as the `Traders Author' gives this book a pedigree that is hard to beat. In this book he delivers eye-opening, seldom shared detail as he teaches the art of evaluating, entering and managing Reversal price action set-ups.
It would not surprise me if there were traders/readers that find this depth of coverage a little overwhelming. If you are looking for a drive-thru experience, my guess is there are many books better suited for that `wham-bam-thank-you-for-giving-me-nothing-I-can-really-use-ma'am' depth of coverage, and speed of read. Perhaps the slew of con-artists selling their no-miss, no-think, no-work from you training packages have duped us into thinking that education and entertainment are the same, and that material should be characterized by PowerPoint type delivery of charts with simple to digest bullet points at the bottom. The standard by which books of this nature are measured should be the real world usability of its content and the clarity of the explanations and not how effortless and quick a read the material is. If this or any book helps me to take on some of the best academically trained, behaviorally-disciplined and infrastructurally well-armed adversaries in the world, and beat them, and it does, then any effort is worth it. Stop dreaming, your adversaries are out to take your lunch, and Dr. Brooks amazing wealth of knowledge which he shares in this book for $45, is a godsend. Do not be discouraged by comments of 'excessive detail' and instead, devour every morsel of the immense experience of one of the most technically astute and disciplined trading masters willing to divulge what he actually does. Decades of experience are distilled into well-structured opening discussions in each chapter, followed by charts and further explanations allowing the reader to see how a real-world trading master puts this theory into practice. And IF it gets `wordy', what do you expect, he is covering 30 years of knowledge.
As I said before, the book is well structured, first presenting the reader with both a list of, and detailed discussions of the attributes of strong reversals. This is cleverly done in isolation from any one chart pattern, allowing the reader to fully grasp this material. With that done, the reader is then taken through each major `price action scenario' (classic chart pattern) in which reversal set-ups occur, which he covers starting from chapter 3 through to chapter 10.
Again this is the 3rd of three books, and having completed Reversals (in Part 1), the author moves onto consolidating this material with those strategies covered in the first two books, viz Trends and Trading Ranges, into what can broadly be referenced as `Putting It All Together' (although this is specifically what he called Part 4).
Yes, there is an immense amount of seldom shared insight and detail, and if some things get repeated as he discusses chart after chart in its entirety, forcing the reader of reaffirm previously covered material, strengthening understanding, while being guided through newer concepts...damn that goose for laying more than one golden egg !!! (apologies Dr. Brooks, I was speaking metaphorically of course ').

A Must Read
By charter
Having read Al's earlier single volume book "Reading Price Action...", I did not think even Al himself could do better than that, because that book was so comprehensive. But this is absolutely amazing. It goes even deeper into teaching Price Action. Its certainly not a novel, cant be read like one, and needs several reads to absorb all the information, and there's plenty on each page! But after this there's nothing more a day trader should need, because Al covers virtually every aspect of trading reversals.
